It is a modern interpretation, not a literal reissue. For the black-dial steel reference IW328901, IWC’s US product page lists a 40 mm case, 10.7 mm thickness, 10-bar water resistance, calibre 32111 and a 120-hour power reserve; it currently displays US$13,500 excluding VAT.
Why the Ingenieur is associated with Gérald Genta
The Ingenieur collection predates Genta’s involvement. IWC introduced the name in the 1950s for watches designed around protection from magnetic fields. The design that the current integrated-bracelet model most directly recalls is the 1976 Ingenieur SL Jumbo, reference 1832. Its round case and bezel, five visible bezel screws, patterned dial and integrated bracelet made it part of the era’s emerging integrated-bracelet sports-watch vocabulary.
Monochrome describes the original SL Jumbo as 40 mm across and almost 14 mm high, powered by calibre 8541 ES. The 2023 Automatic 40 revives its recognizable design language while changing the execution and proportions. IWC’s current product page describes the watch as revisiting “the bold design of Gérald Genta’s iconic Ingenieur SL from the 1970s.” That is a useful description of the reference point, not evidence that the new watch is a one-to-one reproduction.
What changed on the 2023 Ingenieur Automatic 40?
The new watch keeps the five-screw bezel, textured grid dial and bracelet that flows directly from the case. Its case is softer in profile, with crown guards, and the bezel screws are aligned and functional, according to Monochrome. The updated bracelet attachment and revised case proportions give the watch a contemporary build rather than simply reproducing the 1976 model.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For black-dial steel IW328901, IWC currently specifies a 40 mm diameter and 10.7 mm thickness. Monochrome’s launch coverage gives a 45.7 mm lug-to-lug measurement; early thickness figures vary slightly by publication, so the official current figure is the clearest specification for this exact reference.
Steel or titanium: the launch configurations
IWC introduced three stainless-steel dial options and a titanium version in 2023. The materials and finishes are distinct, so the titanium model should not be treated as just another dial colour.

| Water resistance | 10 bar (100 m) |
| Movement | Automatic calibre 32111; 4 Hz; 21 jewels |

The soft-iron inner case is intended to protect the movement against magnetic fields. The cited product information does not give a gauss rating, so a specific level of magnetic resistance should not be inferred. A five-day power reserve and 10-bar water resistance make the listed steel reference practical on paper for regular wear, but those specifications do not answer questions of fit or bracelet comfort.
How does the Ingenieur Automatic 40 wear?
The 40 mm diameter is only one part of fit. The 45.7 mm lug-to-lug figure reported by Monochrome and the 10.7 mm official thickness for IW328901 help put its proportions in context, but wrist shape and personal preference matter. The case and integrated bracelet also create a different visual and wearing profile from a 40 mm watch with a conventional strap.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Time+Tide and Monochrome published hands-on launch coverage, while Hodinkee handled the titanium version. Their impressions are reviewer observations, not a controlled comparison across wrist sizes. Brice Goulard of Monochrome called it, in his opinion, “the best-looking model since the 1970s”; that is his aesthetic judgment, rather than an objective finding about comfort or fit.
Bracelet adjustment is a practical trade-off
Monochrome reports that the bracelet has neither a quick-release system nor on-the-fly micro-adjustment; sizing is done by removing links. That makes initial fitting and later changes less convenient than systems with tool-free adjustment. Because the bracelet is integrated into the design, it is also not an obvious candidate for a generic replacement strap.
