The Lang & Heyne Friedrich III pairs a restrained Roman-numeral dress-watch design with the Saxon maker’s hand-wound Caliber VI, visible through a sapphire caseback. The particular watch examined by Monochrome Watches was an 18k rose-gold version with a frosted silver dial and alligator strap; that is one configuration, not a specification for every Friedrich III.
What the Friedrich III is
The Friedrich III is a traditional dress watch named for Friedrich III, Margrave of Meissen and Landgrave of Thuringia. Its appeal is deliberately classical: a relatively slim round case, Roman numerals, a small-seconds display and a manually wound movement rather than a crowded feature set.
Lang & Heyne’s official factsheet says Friedrich III took over his father’s lands of Thuringia and Meissen in 1349, governing them with his brothers. It also credits his regency with consolidating internal structures and advancing administrative development. The examined rose-gold configuration
In Denis Peshkov’s 4 March 2024 Monochrome Watches hands-on, the watch had an 18k rose-gold case and a frosted silver dial. The dial’s elongated Roman numerals, recessed eccentric-seconds register at six, railway-style minute track and blued cathedral-style hands make a formal layout distinctive without departing from the traditional dress-watch idiom. The manufacturer lists solid-silver dials in bright-frosted, galvanic-black and salmon finishes. It also lists royal-blue and galvanic-black variants with a second glossy bevel. Dial and hand details therefore depend on the selected version; the examined frosted-silver dial should not be taken as the sole Friedrich III design.
Case, dimensions and wearability
Lang & Heyne specifies the standard Friedrich III at 39.2 mm in diameter and 10.5 mm high. It has sapphire crystal at the front and back, with anti-reflective coating on both sides, and water resistance up to 3 bar. The stated water-resistance figure is modest: this is a dress watch, not a model to choose for swimming or diving. Monochrome’s account notes that case and lug options and other customization were available for the configuration it covered. Because those choices may change, confirm the current orderable combinations directly with Lang & Heyne rather than assuming a particular case material, lug setup or clasp can still be selected.
Caliber VI: a hand-wound movement on display
The Friedrich III is powered by Lang & Heyne’s manually wound LH Caliber VI. The manufacturer specifies a 33.5 mm diameter, 4.9 mm thickness, a frequency of 18,000 vibrations per hour (2.5 Hz) and a 55-hour power reserve. Its functions are hours, minutes, eccentric seconds at six and stop-seconds. Stop-seconds halt the seconds hand when setting the time, making precise synchronization easier.

Through the sapphire back, the movement becomes part of the watch’s character rather than a hidden utility. Monochrome describes the examined Caliber VI as having a trigonal bridge, gold-plated brass components and a hand-engraved balance cock. Standard Friedrich III versus the Manufaktur Edition
The Manufaktur Edition is a separate, five-piece special edition, not the standard model in a different dial color. Lang & Heyne specifies black champlevé enamel on white gold, hand-engraved Louis XV hands and a hinged stainless-steel case. Price and availability
Monochrome reported on 4 March 2024 that the configuration it covered was available from the brand for EUR 36,700 including tax. That is a dated, publication-reported price, not a verified current price; a reader comment challenged the attribution. Who the Friedrich III suits
The Friedrich III makes the most sense for someone who wants a traditional, manually wound German dress watch and values the movement’s visible finishing as much as the dial. The 39.2 mm case, Roman numerals and small seconds keep it grounded in familiar dress-watch proportions and grammar, while the eccentric register and Caliber VI give it a more individual identity. Its 3-bar water-resistance rating and restrained styling place it firmly in formal and everyday non-sport use, rather than as a versatile activity watch.
