The Nivada Grenchen Antarctic GMT pairs a compact 36 mm steel case with a distinctly 1970s combination of twin crowns, a black-and-yellow internal 24-hour bezel and a red-and-black checkered GMT hand. Its vintage compressor-style appearance is not a true Super Compressor construction, and its Soprod C125 is a caller-style GMT rather than a travel watch with a jumping local hour. Those distinctions matter as much as its appealing proportions.
What makes the Antarctic GMT distinctive?
The modern Antarctic GMT reinterprets an early-1970s design. Its strongest visual cues are the two crowns on the right side of the case, the internal black-and-yellow 24-hour bezel and the short, checkered GMT hand. A date display and vintage-style Plexiglass crystal complete the period-inspired look.
Launch coverage described a black-dial version and a brown “Tropical” version limited to 99 pieces. That edition count and availability are launch-era details, not confirmation that the Tropical variant remains in production or in stock.
Is it a true Super Compressor?
No. The watch borrows the twin-crown compressor-style appearance, but its case is a conventional two-piece construction rather than the vintage EPSA Super Compressor design. Time+Tide draws this distinction in its review of the Antarctic GMT. The design reference is real; the original compressor mechanism is not.

How do the GMT hand and bezel work?
The upper crown turns the internal 24-hour bezel. Set that bezel against the GMT hand and you can use the hand to track a second time zone while the regular hour and minute hands show local time. The yellow-and-black division marks day and night across the 24-hour scale.
The automatic Soprod C125 is described as a caller-style GMT: its central GMT hand can be adjusted independently, but the local hour hand does not jump in one-hour increments. That makes it suitable for keeping track of another time zone while staying put; frequent travelers who need to reset local time quickly may prefer a traveler-style movement. Fratello’s review and specification listing also gives the movement a 42-hour power reserve, 25 jewels and a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour.

The thickness figures differ because sources report different measurements; Fratello explicitly includes the crystal in its 11.6 mm figure. The 50 m / 5 ATM rating is the published specification, not a guarantee that every swimming or water activity is appropriate. Check the watch’s current manufacturer guidance and condition before exposing it to water.
How it is likely to wear, and what to know about straps
A 36 mm diameter and the 40 mm lug-to-lug measurement reported by Fratello give the watch compact proportions on paper. Its box-style Plexiglass adds vintage character, while the internal bezel and checkered hand make the dial more visually active than a simple three-hand design. The bezel’s day-and-night markings help convey a second time zone, but the overall display is busy by design.

Launch coverage reports a 20 mm lug width and factory configurations with leather straps and steel bracelets. Confirm the exact variant and fit before ordering a replacement strap or bracelet; the reported factory choices do not establish compatibility for every aftermarket option.
What launch coverage says about price and availability
November 2024 coverage reported launch-era pricing around US$1,600, with regional and strap-dependent differences. That is historical launch information, not a current price. Who should consider the Antarctic GMT?
- A good fit: someone drawn to 1970s design, compact case dimensions and a GMT display with more personality than a conventional outer bezel.
- Think twice if: you want a true EPSA-style compressor case, a traveler GMT with jumping local hours, a simpler dial, or a higher published water-resistance rating.
- Before buying: verify the exact dial and strap configuration, current price and stock, and the case dimensions for the specific listing.
