The 2023 redesign gave Christiaan van der Klaauw’s Ariadne a more textured, higher-contrast dial without changing its central proposition: an automatic chronograph paired with a full calendar and moon-phase display. Its frosted dial surface and circular-brushed sub-dial rings are the defining visual updates; the watch retains the familiar CVDK7758 movement architecture and an intricate array of calendar and timing indications.
What changed in the 2023 redesign?
The redesign focused on the dial rather than a new complication or movement concept. The three launch versions—silver, navy blue, and anthracite—combine a frosted background with raised, circular-brushed rings around the subdials. Applied Breguet-style numerals and hands complete the presentation. The contrast between the textured central surface and the rings gives the busy display more visual separation.
Monochrome Watches’ 17 January 2023 hands-on report describes the movement and display as almost untouched. It also identifies the collection as the first watches made under Pim Koeslag’s leadership. The key change, then, is one of finish and legibility: the Ariadne remains a calendar chronograph with moon phases, not a different watch mechanically.
What does the Ariadne display?
The layout combines timekeeping, chronograph timing, and calendar information. The 2023 launch article counts eight hands and three discs on the dial—a reminder of how much information the watch fits into its 40 mm case.
#1 Best Overall
- This is a precision panoramic large aperture moon phase automatic mechanical watch crafted by Swiss chief designer Etienne Ruffieux, inspired by the sun, moon, and stars. The intricately carved luminous moon changes once daily, fully showcasing the entire cycle of nature's waxing and waning phases. The watch has been honored with the Chicago Design Award for its outstanding original design. This is a moon phase mechanical watch, brimming with the celestial beauty of the sun, moon, and stars.
- In-house CAL.A4610 automatic mechanical movement, bidirectional automatic winding system, 28,880 vibrations per hour, 27 ruby bearings. Exquisite perlage and geneva stripes finishing, edge chamfering process, white gold plating, and engraved gold-plated brand logo. Enhanced power reserve technology delivers an extended 80-hour power reserve (twice that of standard mechanical movements). It enables more even and gradual release of the mainspring, resulting in more precise and stable timekeeping.
- The moon phase disc in Agelocer's in-house CAL.A4610 automatic mechanical movement features a precision 31-tooth structure. It advances one segment every 22.846 hours, completing a full cycle every 29.51 days to achieve a 708.23-hour lunar cycle. (Conventional moon phase discs use a 59-tooth gear, advancing one notch every 24 hours to complete a full cycle in 29.5 days, resulting in a 708-hour lunar cycle.)
- The astronomical lunar cycle is 29.53 days (708.72 hours), meaning conventional moon phases accumulate a one-day error every 2.7 years. The Agelocer moon phase watch accumulates one day of error every 4.1 years, offering greater precision than traditional 59-tooth moon phase mechanisms.
- The moon takes center stage in this timepiece. To bring it to life on the wrist, we employed precision metal engraving techniques, enhanced with an expensive platinum-plating process to render the moon's texture strikingly lifelike. To ensure the moon radiates brilliance even in darkness, we selected Swiss Super-LumiNova luminous coating. Its luminous effect cycles infinitely has no time limit. This uncompromising pursuit exists to showcase the moon's most captivating aspect as it rotates.
- Hours and minutes
- Small seconds
- Pointer date, day, and month
- 24-hour/day-night indication and moon phase
- Central chronograph seconds, plus 30-minute and 12-hour counters

How later Ariadne versions differ
The original trio should be kept separate from later catalog executions. Christiaan van der Klaauw’s official product pages include an anthracite CKAR3344 with a black leather strap and a smoked-black sapphire-dial CKAR33S4 with a black FKM strap. The official anthracite listing also specifies the CVDK7758, a 40 mm steel case, and a maximum 48-hour power reserve. The smoked-sapphire page states that the movement and case carry a three-year warranty. These are manufacturer descriptions of later versions, not evidence that every 2023 launch model had the same strap or dial construction.
A Phillips Hong Kong Sessions Fall 2026 catalogue entry describes a limited redesigned Ariadne made for long-time retail partner Reijersen Juweliers: frosted salmon and turquoise dials, with 50 pieces in each color. That catalogue documents a special edition, not present-day retail stock.

- This is a precision panoramic large aperture moon phase automatic mechanical watch crafted from blue aventurine, the material that most closely resembles the starry night sky, designed by Swiss chief designer Etienne Ruffieux, inspired by the sun, moon, and stars. The intricately carved luminous moon changes once daily, fully showcasing the entire cycle of nature's waxing and waning phases. This watch has been awarded the European Design Award for its outstanding original design.

- The dial is made of natural blue aventurine from Brazil. Its deep blue or violet-blue color from scaly vivianite contained within quartz crystals during geological formation. It shimmers with a beautiful, soft glow, like sky full of stars, make it most star-like natural dial material available today. In this panoramic large moon phase watch, as the dynamic moon perfectly glides across the starry surface of the blue aventurine dial, it feels as if the cosmic starry sky is right before your eyes.

- Before AGELOCER introduced its panoramic moon phase watch with a large aperture, traditional moon phases were displayed through small windows. This groundbreaking 28.5mm large aperture moon phase design pioneered the industry's first panoramic moon phase watch. To power the large moon phase disc and prevent the dial from shifting due to wrist movement inertia during wear, the design team spent hundreds of hours on repeated testing.
- They completely re-engineered the watch's reversing and drive mechanisms, thickened the toggle spring, and boosted the power output of the rotating disc—using sophisticated R&D to counteract inertia. This technology is now protected by a Chinese utility model patent.
