The MING 17.09 Blue stands out for its metallic-blue, two-part dial and luminous markers mounted beneath the sapphire crystal. Its 38mm steel case houses a modified Sellita-based movement with an independently adjustable hour hand—useful for travel and daylight-saving changes. MING says the watch is sold out, deliveries are complete, and it will not be made again, so prospective buyers now need to look to the secondary market.
What makes the blue 17.09 distinctive?
The dial is built in two parts: a fine Clous-de-Paris pattern at the center and a circular-brushed outer section. MING describes the color as metallic blue. Rather than placing the luminous indices directly on the dial, MING laser-etched them on the underside of the sapphire crystal and filled them with Super-LumiNova X1. That separation gives the markers a sense of depth above the dial.
In a hands-on review published July 27, 2021, Fratello reviewer Michael Stockton called the blue shade unexpected and said it appeared especially bright in sunlight. He also described the crystal-mounted lume as creating a floating effect. Those are his visual impressions, not measured brightness or color results. Fratello’s review provides the original hands-on account.
How does the independently adjustable hour hand work?
The MING caliber 330.M1 is based on the Sellita SW330-2 and modified for MING by Manufacture Schwarz-Etienne. Its intermediate crown position moves the hour hand independently while the rest of the movement keeps running. That lets you shift the displayed local hour without stopping the watch or resetting the minutes—handy when crossing time zones or changing for daylight saving time.

- To adjust the hour independently, pull the crown to its intermediate position and turn it crisply. The hour hand advances in one direction, jumping a full hour at a time.
- After setting the hour, back-wind the crown one full turn to disengage the setting mechanism. MING’s guide notes that the minute hand may briefly catch up.
- To set both the hour and minute hands together, pull the crown to its third position. The movement stops while the hands are set.
- If the watch has stopped after its reserve is depleted, MING’s guide recommends 20–30 turns of hand winding followed by a light shake to restart it.
These operating instructions come from MING’s 17.09 user guide. The guide describes approximately 40 hours of reserve when fully wound; the product archive lists 42 hours. Those are the figures published in the two separate MING references, not a single reconciled measurement.
How does it wear on paper?
The stainless-steel case measures 38mm across, 10mm thick and 43.9mm lug to lug. Those dimensions give a useful starting point for judging fit, but case measurements alone cannot establish how it will sit on a particular wrist. The case is 316L steel with mixed brushed and polished finishing, a solid caseback and a sapphire crystal with double-sided anti-reflective coating.

MING rates the watch to 100m water resistance and specifies triple gaskets at the crown. These are the manufacturer’s specifications; a used watch’s present water resistance depends on its condition and service history, so do not assume the original rating has been preserved without a suitable pressure test.

What should you know about the strap and care?
The original Jean Rousseau strap is listed as 20x18mm, but matching those dimensions alone may not be enough when choosing a replacement. It has a curved quick-release fitting, so confirm that the replacement also accommodates the curved end attachment. MING lists the strap’s intended wrist circumference as 160–210mm; fit can still vary with wrist shape and how the strap is worn.
For cleaning, MING recommends a soft, clean, damp cloth and strongly discourages cleaning agents or solutions. That advice appears in the official user guide.

Is the MING 17.09 Blue still available new?
No. MING’s archive says the watch is sold out, deliveries are complete, and it will not be produced again. The page is retained for reference and information, not as an offer of new stock. Buyers should treat current availability as secondary-market availability and assess each specific listing rather than assume the watch is obtainable new.
For price context, Monochrome Watches reported a launch price of CHF 1,950 in 2021, when ordering opened on April 15. That is historical launch pricing, not a current asking price. Monochrome’s 2021 launch report describes the original release.

Phillips records one circa-2022 example, reference 17.09, sold for CHF 2,540 at its Geneva Sessions Spring 2025 auction. A single auction result is a record of that transaction, not a general market valuation or a guide to what a particular watch should cost. Phillips’ auction record identifies the example and movement.
