Seiko’s official name is the “Seiko Prospex The 1968 Automatic Diver’s Commemorative Limited Edition” (SLA019); “Marinemaster” is common specialist shorthand, not part of the official model name. The specifications below follow Seiko’s product page, while design and wearing observations are attributed to Fratello’s Robert-Jan Broer, who wrote about the watch on June 4, 2018.
What the SLA019J1 is—and what “Marinemaster” means
Seiko presents the watch as a limited-edition commemoration of its 1968 diver. Fratello’s Robert-Jan Broer places it in the Marinemaster 300 lineage and notes its connection to Seiko reference 6159, but says it is not officially named a Marinemaster. That distinction matters when identifying the watch: SLA019 is Seiko’s product-page reference, while SLA019J1 and “Marinemaster” are familiar specialist and search terms.
Seiko specifies an edition of 1,968 pieces. Its current Marinemaster collection page covers newer references SLA077 and SLA079; those are separate models, not alternative names for the SLA019J1.

What changed from the SBDX017
In his 2018 comparison with the earlier Marinemaster 300 SBDX017, Broer identifies sapphire crystal and a ceramic bezel as notable changes; he describes the earlier watch as having a metal bezel. He also calls the green dial and bezel the most visible difference. These are details from his account rather than wording in Seiko’s official specification list.
Broer reports that the green color was inspired by Yakushima Island and its Japanese cedar forests. He describes the watch as retaining the 44.3 mm case size. His article calls the movement 8L35B, whereas Seiko’s product page specifies 8L35. The sources do not establish whether the difference reflects a naming nuance or an error, so Seiko’s listed 8L35 is the clearest reference for the official specification.

How the 1968 heritage fits
Seiko’s history of the 1968 diver says it arrived three years after the company’s first diver and combined 300 m water resistance with a high-precision, 10-beat automatic movement, one-piece case construction, a screw-down crown, and a unidirectional bezel. Seiko describes the current Marinemaster collection as a reinterpretation of that 1968 design. This is heritage context, not evidence that every construction detail of the earlier watch carries over to the SLA019J1.
Bracelet and strap observations
Broer reports that the SLA019J1 came with a stainless-steel bracelet and a silicone strap. He found the bracelet clasp’s extension behavior annoying while opening it, but said it was not a problem when the watch was worn. That is one reviewer’s observation, not evidence of a universal defect. Seiko lists a 20 mm lug width; check fit and compatibility before choosing a replacement strap.
