The 2017 Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Geographic with sector dial pairs local time with a city-selected second time zone. A crown at 10 o’clock advances a 24-city disc; the selected city corresponds to a separate time subdial, while a small indicator shows whether it is day or night there. Its practical world-time display is distinctive, but the city aperture and subdial make the lower half of the dial visually busy.
How the city-based second time zone works
The watch does not use a conventional GMT hand. Instead, it lets you select a named city, with the second-zone display changing in step with the city disc. Fratello’s 2017 hands-on review describes the crown at 10 o’clock as the control for choosing a city; the crown at 3 o’clock sets local time and the second-time-zone minute hand together. Time+Tide also describes the city ring and second-zone display moving in sync.
- Use the crown at 10 o’clock to select a city on the 24-city disc.
- Read the corresponding time on the small second-time-zone subdial.
- Check the small indicator near 7:30 to see whether it is day or night in that zone.
- Use the crown at 3 o’clock to set local time and the second-zone minute hand together, as described by Fratello.
This makes the display intuitive if you think in destinations—for example, selecting a city you regularly call—rather than in hour offsets. The cited reviews explain the city-selection arrangement, but do not establish how the mechanism handles every daylight-saving change or every location that differs from a listed city’s offset.
Is it a real sector dial?
That depends on how narrowly you use the term. Fratello’s Robert-Jan Broer noted that some enthusiasts questioned whether this design qualified as a “real” sector dial. His own assessment was that the distinction did not bother him: he found the colors and layout successful. The watch has a brushed silver-grey track, a grained silver center and blue hands, with the city disc occupying the 6 o’clock area.

Time+Tide’s Felix Scholz describes the hands as blued, skeletonized and syringe-style. He praises the restrained overall presentation of a complicated display, while observing that the city aperture is visually dominant and the small 24-hour indicator takes some getting used to. Monochrome notes that this version omits the date and power-reserve indicator, leaving more of the dial’s attention for world-time information.
What it is like to read and wear
The useful information is concentrated in the lower dial: the city disc identifies the selected second zone, its subdial shows that zone’s time, and the day/night indicator adds context. That is more immediately informative than a bare offset, but it also gives the dial several things to parse at once. Time+Tide explicitly raises the taste tradeoff: someone drawn to a quieter, more purely retro dial may find the complication display less appealing.

- 【✨ Caring for Your Mechanical Watch】Please be mindful when engaging in sports or activities with strong, repetitive arm movements (like swinging a racket or hammering or strenuous labor). These motions generate extreme G-force that can overspeed the balance wheel, affecting the watch's accuracy and lifespan. For intense physical activities, we suggest simply taking the watch off to protect its inner workings—it only takes a second and ensures your timepiece stays in top condition
Fratello and Monochrome report a 39 mm stainless-steel case and 11.77 mm thickness. A 2026 video from The 1916 Company gives the Q1428530 dimensions as 39 mm in diameter, 9.5 mm thick and 46 mm lug-to-lug. The thickness figures conflict; the sources do not explain the discrepancy, so confirm the particular watch’s measurements if fit is decisive.
