The Stowa Flieger Klassik 40 keeps the highly legible, instrument-like look of a traditional pilot watch in a contemporary 40 mm case. The current automatic and hand-wound versions share the same case footprint but differ in movement, thickness and stated water resistance, so the right choice depends on how you want to wear and operate it.
What the Stowa Flieger Klassik 40 is
STOWA presents its Flieger Classic series as a continuation of a pilot-watch design it has built since 1940. The brand identifies the high-contrast dial, luminous numerals, blued hands and triangle marker at 12 as defining details. That is the manufacturer’s account of its design heritage, rather than independent proof that every current detail matches a historical watch. STOWA’s series page explains the current collection.
The current Klassik 40 is a modern wristwatch, not a miniature exact-size reproduction of the original B-Uhr instrument. Fratello’s historical review describes the original specification as a 55 mm watch, with a large crown intended for use with gloves and a strap long enough to wear over a flight-jacket sleeve. The Klassik 40’s 40 mm case is a very different proposition for everyday wear. Fratello’s review also distinguishes the Type A dial, with 1–11 numerals and a triangle with two dots at 12, from the Type B layout, which places an hour scale inside an outer minute scale.

The automatic configuration’s listed details, including its sapphire crystal, temperature-blued hands, Super-LumiNova C3 and configurable dial, appear on STOWA’s automatic product page. The hand-wound specifications and its configurator options—including brown or black pilot-style straps and a stainless-steel bracelet—are on STOWA’s hand-wound product page. STOWA lists sapphire casebacks for viewing the movements in the series; consult the chosen configuration for its exact options.
Which version should you choose?
Choose automatic for everyday convenience
The automatic SW 200 is the straightforward pick if you expect to wear the watch regularly and prefer not to wind it by hand. STOWA describes the automatic as the more convenient daily-wear option. Its listed case is about 1 mm taller than the hand-wound alternative, and its stated water resistance is higher.

Choose hand-wound for a thinner case and winding ritual
The SW 210 hand-wound version is 9.2 mm thick, compared with 10.6 mm for the listed automatic. Winding the crown becomes part of using the watch; STOWA identifies that ritual as a draw for this version. Its stated water resistance is up to 5 ATM, rather than the automatic’s 10 ATM. These are the manufacturer’s ratings, not a reason to assume either watch is suitable for every water activity.
Decide on the dial and bracelet setup
The dial is configurable, and STOWA’s current options allow buyers to tailor the look. Check the selected listing for logo and date preferences rather than assuming every dial variant has the same details. The hand-wound configurator lists pilot-style leather straps and a stainless-steel bracelet. Both versions use a 20 mm strap width, so replacement straps should match that width; also verify strap length and buckle compatibility before ordering.

Will the 40 mm case fit your wrist?
Diameter alone does not settle fit. The 48.6 mm lug-to-lug measurement is useful because it describes how far the watch spans across the wrist. Compare that measurement with a watch you already find comfortable, or measure the flatter top surface of your wrist. If the lugs extend past the wrist’s edges, the watch may look or feel wide even though its diameter is 40 mm.
The 20 mm strap width is a separate measurement: it is the distance between the lugs where the strap attaches, not the case diameter or strap length. A correct width does not guarantee a comfortable fit, so check the strap’s available length and the buckle dimensions as well.

How close is it to an original B-Uhr?
The resemblance is primarily in the visual language: a highly legible layout, luminous numerals, a prominent triangle at 12 and blued hands. Fratello identifies the reviewed Klassik 40 as drawing on the Type A B-Uhr design, while its account of the original instrument describes a 55 mm case and practical features for use in flight gear. The modern 40 mm watch is substantially smaller and suited to the wrist; the available evidence does not establish that every present-day configuration duplicates the full historical specification.
Is the Stowa Flieger Klassik 40 worth it?
It is worth considering if you want a clearly legible pilot-style design in a relatively wearable case and value a choice between automatic convenience and hand-wound interaction. The measurements, movement and water-resistance rating differ by configuration, so compare the exact version rather than treating “Klassik 40” as one uniform specification. At the current displayed automatic price of €1,350 including German VAT, with shipping additional, make the decision against the features and configuration you actually want—not an older review’s price.
Fratello’s article is useful for the historical design context, but its publication-era €950 price and ETA movement references do not describe the current listings. STOWA’s current product pages list Sellita SW 200 and SW 210 movements and show the automatic configuration at €1,350 including 19% VAT. Check the current automatic listing for price and delivery terms before purchase.
