What is the Hanhart 417 ES Steve McQueen Limited Edition No. 1?
It is a modern limited edition of Hanhart’s 417 ES flyback chronograph, made in a run of 300. Its steel case measures 39 mm across, 13.3 mm tall including the crystal and 46 mm from lug to lug. The case combines satin finishing and polished surfaces. A fluted, bidirectional rotating bezel has a red insert, and the red chronograph pusher is made of HyCeram.
The convex sapphire crystal has internal anti-reflective treatment. A screw-down caseback includes a sapphire display window and an engraving identifying the individual watch’s number out of 300. Hanhart rates the watch to 10 bar / 10 ATM under DIN 8310. That is the manufacturer’s stated rating, not a guarantee of performance under every real-world condition.
Dial, hands and strap
The matte-black dial bears the historical Hanhart logo and Steve McQueen’s signature. Numerals and hands use Super-LumiNova Light Old Radium GL. Hanhart also notes that the minute and seconds hands have curved tips intended to reduce parallax errors.

The supplied dark-brown Shell Cordovan strap has a cuff, or Bund-style, pad and a pin buckle bearing the historical logo. Hanhart identifies Comipel, an Italian tannery, as the leather source.
Movement and chronograph functions
Hanhart specifies a hand-wound Sellita AMT5100 M movement with 23 jewels, a frequency of 28,800 A/h (4 Hz) and a 58-hour power reserve. Listed functions include small seconds, hacking seconds, central chronograph seconds and a 30-minute counter.

The flyback function lets the wearer reset and immediately restart a running chronograph with one press, rather than stopping it first and then resetting it. The published specifications do not establish an independent accuracy or durability result for this particular watch.
How it differs from the standard Hanhart 417 ES
The limited edition’s special features are primarily commemorative; its basic watch proposition remains close to the standard-production 417 ES Heritage Flyback. Hanhart and specialist coverage identify the case size, movement and flyback function as shared elements. The edition-specific differences include the signed dial, 300-piece limitation, engraved caseback number, commemorative card and presentation details.

The added cost, if the dated price comparison still applies, buys the edition’s McQueen-specific details rather than a different case size or a distinct movement platform. Whether those details justify the premium depends on how much value you place on the signature, limited number and family-linked presentation.
Did Steve McQueen really wear a Hanhart 417 ES?
Hanhart says photographs show McQueen wearing a 417 ES from 1963 onward, including around his racing and film work. That supports describing him as a wearer of the model. It does not settle how he acquired it: Hanhart’s historical account says, “Wie er zu der Uhr kam, ist nicht abschließend dokumentiert” (“How he came to own the watch is not conclusively documented”). The modern limited edition should not be confused with a watch issued to McQueen or with a claim that this specific edition has military provenance.

Hanhart says the historical 417 ES was built between 1953 and 1962 and originally developed as a pilot’s chronograph for the German Bundeswehr. Specialist coverage explains “ES” as Edelstahl, or stainless steel, distinguishing the steel 417 ES from the earlier 417.

Hanhart says McQueen’s grandchildren, Chase and Madison, took part in developing the edition and signed its limited-edition card. The card draws on the design of McQueen’s 1964 international FIM racing licence. The presentation also includes a numbered plaque and red nail polish as a reference to the red chronograph pusher. These are manufacturer-described presentation details; they do not establish a documented historical origin for the red pusher.

Price and availability
Hanhart’s product page lists the watch at €2,890 including VAT and states a 300-piece limit. SJX reported on 2 October 2026 that it was available through Hanhart’s online shop and authorized dealers. Both price and stock are time-sensitive, and availability may vary by market; check Hanhart or an authorized dealer for the current position.

The most useful buying questions are about fit, winding preference, function and the value of the edition-specific details:
