Both sizes use Hanhart’s hand-wound AMT5100 M flyback chronograph and are offered with panda or reverse-panda dials. The details below are manufacturer specifications, not firsthand wear or timing observations.
What changes between the 39 mm and 42 mm versions?
Hanhart presents the 39 mm 417 ES 1954 Flyback as matching the historical design’s case size and the 42 mm as its larger counterpart. That describes the brand’s design rationale, not how either size will fit a particular wrist. The current product pages list both at 13.3 mm thick including the crystal, or 11.55 mm without it. Caseback and anti-magnetic specifications are reference-specific; they should not be assumed for every watch carrying the 417 ES name. Hanhart’s Heritage explanation describes the 39 mm as having an anti-magnetic case and solid back, and the 42 mm as having a sapphire back through which the movement can be seen. What movement is in the current 417 ES Flyback?
The cited current Flyback models specify Hanhart’s hand-wound Sellita AMT5100 M. Hanhart describes it as a flyback chronograph with a column-wheel or switchwheel control and a stated 58-hour power reserve. For the 39 mm 417 ES 1954 Flyback Panda, the published specifications also include 28,800 A/h, 4 Hz and 23 jewels. These are manufacturer figures, not independent timing results. A flyback function lets the wearer reset and restart the running chronograph in one operation, rather than stopping it first. Do not confuse the AMT5100 M in these current Flyback references with the Sellita SW 510 M listed for an earlier 42 mm Pioneer 417 ES in Hanhart’s 2022 catalog. Dial options and other published features
Hanhart lists panda and reverse-panda dial treatments in both sizes. Its product copy says the dials use Super-LumiNova C3 for visibility in poor light. The cited 39 mm 1954 Panda reference has a stainless-steel case, convex sapphire crystal with internal anti-reflective treatment, bidirectionally rotating fluted bezel with a red insert, small seconds and a 30-minute counter. Hanhart’s historical account says the original 417 was built as a pilot chronograph for the newly founded German armed forces, and identifies the 39 mm 1954 variant as the historical design size. Those are manufacturer-provided historical claims. Hanhart 39 mm 417 ES 1954 Flyback Panda.

Start with the dimensions and construction that matter to you rather than assuming a diameter will determine fit. The 39 mm’s published 46 mm lug-to-lug figure can help compare it with a watch you already wear; Hanhart does not state a corresponding lug-to-lug figure on the cited 42 mm product page. Choose the 42 mm if its larger stated diameter and display caseback are the features you want, or the 39 mm if the smaller diameter and specified solid anti-magnetic caseback better match your priorities.

- Confirm the listing names the exact size and reference, not simply “417 ES.”
- Check whether the dial is panda or reverse panda.
- Verify caseback type and any anti-magnetic rating against that reference’s product page.
