There is a persuasive case that IWC made a smart ambassador choice, but “masterstroke” is not something the available evidence can prove. Eileen Gu gives the watchmaker a credible link between elite skiing, fashion and public advocacy, and IWC has connected that profile to both a watch campaign and an on-mountain youth event. The company’s announcements document a sustained association through April 2026; they do not establish sales growth, brand lift or a measurable return on the partnership.
Why IWC chose Eileen Gu
IWC announced Gu as an ambassador on 11 August 2021, presenting her as both a freestyle skier and a model. The choice offered a bridge between performance sport and fashion—two worlds that fit a watch brand with collections positioned across sporty, casual and elegant styles.
IWC’s then-chief marketing officer, Franziska Gsell, described Gu’s “multifaceted personality,” discipline, ambition and commitment to using sport to unite people as reasons she suited the brand. That is the company’s stated rationale, rather than independent evidence that the partnership would outperform another ambassador choice. Gu, for her part, said she saw sport as a way to connect people across cultures and shared IWC’s focus on excellence. IWC’s 2021 announcement
How IWC built the partnership beyond a watch endorsement
The 2022 campaign put the Pilot’s Watch Chronograph 41 in the frame
On 25 January 2022, IWC launched “Our stage is now,” a campaign that intercut Gu skating and skiing. The title line—“Our stage is not the future. Our stage is now”—matched the image of a young athlete already competing at the highest level, rather than waiting for a future breakthrough.

The campaign paired Gu with the Pilot’s Watch Chronograph 41: a 41 mm stainless-steel model offered in the campaign release with blue or green dials, an in-house movement and a quick-change strap system. This was the clearest product link in IWC’s early storytelling: the watch appeared alongside Gu’s sporting and fashion profile, not as equipment for skiing. IWC’s 2022 campaign announcement
The 2023 Aspen event gave the association a community-facing role
On 25 January 2023, IWC reported that Gu led a training day for young skiers in Aspen with the Aspen Valley Ski and Snowboard Club and local partner Meridian Jewellers. Gu said she shared skiing tips and talked about confidence and practice. That activation gave the partnership a dimension beyond advertising: a chance for young skiers to meet an athlete and take part in a coached session.

Is Eileen Gu still an IWC ambassador?
Yes, according to IWC’s latest reviewed appearance report: on 15 April 2026, the company identified Gu as a brand ambassador at Watches and Wonders in Geneva. Its earlier report, dated 1 April 2025, also called her an ambassador and traced the relationship to 2021. The 2025 report said she wore the Ingenieur Automatic 35, reference IW324903; the 2026 report identified the Portofino Automatic 34 Day & Night Le Petit Prince, reference IW459806. Neither event report discloses contract terms, so the public evidence confirms the association at those events, not its duration beyond them. Does the partnership qualify as a masterstroke?
As a positioning decision, it looks well judged. Gu’s skiing credentials make the sporting connection tangible; her fashion work broadens the association beyond a single sport; and IWC has shown the partnership in both a campaign and a youth event. The later Geneva appearances suggest continuity rather than a one-off endorsement.
But the public case stops short of proving commercial success. The IWC releases reviewed do not provide independent campaign reach, brand-lift research, sales uplift, sponsorship valuation or comparisons with alternative ambassadors. IWC has published career statistics in its own coverage—including 18 FIS World Cup victories and stated win and podium rates in its 2025 report—but those figures describe Gu’s sporting profile, not the effect of the endorsement. Without independent outcome data, “masterstroke” is a reasonable opinion about the fit and execution, not a demonstrated return on investment.
