Helmut Sinn, the pilot and watchmaker who founded Sinn Spezialuhren, died on 14 February 2018 at age 101, after a short illness. His legacy spans pilot and navigation watches, a landmark spaceflight chronograph, and decades of work with the Guinand name.
Who was Helmut Sinn?
Born on 3 September 1916, Sinn was a pilot, aviation expert, flight instructor and entrepreneur. Guinand’s centenary profile also describes him as a rally driver. He brought an aviator’s practical perspective to watchmaking, building instruments intended for pilots and navigation rather than treating watches as accessories alone.
Building a watch company for pilots
In 1961, Sinn founded Helmut Sinn Spezialuhren in Frankfurt. The company concentrated on navigation watches and pilot chronographs. Retailer ALTHERR notes that Sinn sold directly to customers, avoiding intermediaries—a sales approach that reflected his independent way of doing business.
A Sinn watch goes into space
One of the most striking examples of Sinn’s watchmaking legacy is the Sinn 140 S. The World Watch Museum records that physicist Reinhard Furrer wore the chronograph during the 1985 Spacelab D-1 mission. The museum says the flight demonstrated that an automatic mechanical movement’s rotor could function in zero gravity. This is the museum’s account of the mission’s significance.

After the sale: Chronosport and Guinand
Sinn sold his company to Lothar Schmidt in 1994. The sale did not end his involvement in watchmaking: Guinand’s centenary profile says he resumed production under the Chronosport and Guinand names. Guinand’s death notice describes him as having accompanied and helped shape the brand, and as having brought Guinand to Germany over more than 50 years.
Guinand’s notice remembered him this way: “Mr. Helmut Sinn lives on in the watches he designed and continues to inspire us to build watches with character.”

Why some accounts say he was 102
Guinand’s English-language death notice states that Sinn died at age 101 on 14 February 2018. Its German notice says he died “in seinem 102. Lebensjahr”—in his 102nd year—which means he had completed 101 years and was living his 102nd. The completed age of 101 is therefore the accurate wording for the headline.
