His documented role was working with his physics teacher, Dr. Heinz Schilt—not designing or manufacturing the watch alone. Heuer introduced the original Solunar in 1949; a separate, larger model followed in 1975.
How Jack Heuer became involved in the Solunar
In the late 1940s, Heuer made watches and chronographs for the U.S. sporting-goods retailer Abercrombie & Fitch. TAG Heuer’s account says retailer Walter Haynes asked Charles-Edouard Heuer to create a watch that displayed tide times. In a recollection reproduced on TAG Heuer’s vintage page, Jack said his father was unsure how to calculate the mechanism, so Jack suggested asking his physics teacher, Dr. Heinz Schilt. TAG Heuer’s vintage account attributes the recollection to Jack Heuer’s biography.

Jack later described this as his first professional contribution. A 2024 TAG Heuer article quotes him recalling that the work happened around 1947 or 1948, when he was 15. The watch itself dates to 1949, so the calculations preceded its introduction. TAG Heuer’s official history of the 1940s says Jack worked with his professor on calculations for both lunar time and ordinary solar time. The evidence supports a meaningful early contribution, not the claim that Jack alone built the watch.

The original Solunar was a three-hand watch with a colorful tide disc. Its intended users included fishermen and sailors who wanted a way to track tide times. The wearer consulted local tide information and set the disc with a pusher; after midnight, the disc advanced to indicate subsequent tide times. TAG Heuer calls it the first wristwatch with a permanent tide indicator. That priority claim is the company’s, rather than an independently verified finding. See TAG Heuer’s description of the Solunar.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The design also exposed a usability challenge. In correspondence between Heuer and Abercrombie & Fitch, reproduced by TAG Heuer, someone wrote: “This Solunar watch is a big hit, but it also has a big flaw. To sell it you need a ‘how to set and how to handle it’ explanation. Despite a superb color leaflet, the explanation is too complicated, and the sellers in the shops prefer to sell simple watches.” The excerpt does not identify its individual author. It shows the trade-off in a specialized tool watch: a useful complication could be difficult to explain and set.
How the Solunar idea led to other Heuer tide watches
Heuer extended the tide-indication idea into chronographs. The Mareograph combined a tide display with a three-register chronograph; Abercrombie & Fitch sold it under the Seafarer name, and Orvis later offered a related version called the Solunagraph. TAG Heuer says the Mareograph line continued into the 1970s. These are related branches of the story, not alternate names for the original three-hand Solunar. The company’s vintage history and 1940s timeline describe the lineage.

How the 1975 Solunar differs from the original
The Solunar name returned in 1975 on reference 279.603, a different design from the 1949 watch. TAG Heuer describes a 45 mm stainless-steel case, blue dial, day-date display, two-week inner disc, external tide bezel, domed plexiglass crystal, and ETA 2790-1 movement. It was offered on a steel bracelet or a Tropic-style strap. The original, by contrast, was a three-hand watch with a colorful tide disc; the later reference added a larger case and a more elaborate calendar and tide display. Specifications are from TAG Heuer’s vintage collection page.
How the 1975 tide indicator was intended to work
TAG Heuer’s explanation starts with local tide-chart information: the wearer sets the day marker against a known high-tide time. The inner disc then indicates high-tide times across a two-week span, while the outer bezel helps read the intervening low tide. The company describes an approximate daily shift of 51.5 minutes and roughly six hours between high and low tide. These figures explain the mechanism as TAG Heuer presents it; they are not an independent accuracy test. The watch should not be treated as a substitute for current local tide information. Details appear in TAG Heuer’s explanation of reference 279.603.

What to check when looking for a vintage Heuer Solunar
Listings using “Heuer Solunar” may refer to different generations. Identify the watch by its reference and display before comparing examples: the original 1949 model is distinct from the 1975 reference 279.603, and the Mareograph/Seafarer is a chronograph with tide indication rather than a Solunar model. For any individual vintage watch, verify authenticity, condition, and service history. No current listing availability or market price is established here. If considering a replacement strap for the 1970s model, confirm the watch’s lug width and fit; the documented Tropic-style option alone does not establish compatible dimensions.
