The Type 20 chronograph began as a French military-aviation designation, not as the name of a watch made exclusively by Breguet. In the early 1950s, French defense authorities set requirements for pilot chronographs; Breguet’s archive records a Type 20 already homologated in 1953 and a military example delivered to the French Air Ministry in 1955. Its defining flyback function let pilots time successive intervals with one reset-and-restart action. Breguet later developed a civilian Type XX, and its current Type 20 and Type XX watches continue those military and civilian strands.
What did “Type 20” mean?
Type 20 was a military designation tied to French aviation chronograph requirements developed in the early 1950s. It described a specification and military-watch context, rather than one exclusive Breguet model. Breguet was among the makers associated with the designation, but the history should not be reduced to a single brand’s product line.
The requirements reflected the demands of cockpit use. Breguet’s archival interpretation and Swatch Group’s historical account describe features including a black dial, luminous numerals and hands, a rotating bezel, and a flyback chronograph. Swatch Group also summarizes a requirement for a movement able to withstand pressure and acceleration changes. These are accounts of the military context and requirements; they do not establish that every delivered watch had precisely identical details.
How did the Type 20 develop?
Aviation experience before the designation
Breguet’s involvement with aviation instruments preceded the Type 20. Its official history traces specialist aviation work and archival records back to the 1930s. A letter dated April 29, 1952, from the French aeronautics technical service, STAé, to the director of the Besançon observatory confirms Breguet’s interest in chronographs for aircraft and pilots. Breguet’s historical account also identifies a defense study dated July 1, 1953, that described a Breguet Type 20 as already homologated.

That study compared the Breguet chronograph with a German Hanhart, and Breguet’s account notes that Hanhart watches had entered French armed-forces hands as war spoils. This places the Type 20 in a broader postwar military-watch context; it does not, by itself, establish a single origin story for the French designation.
Delivery to the French Air Ministry
Breguet records military Type 20 No. 7211 as delivered to the French Air Ministry on November 16, 1955, and says the French Air Force supplied the watches as part of pilots’ equipment. Swatch Group’s 2023 historical account reports that 1,100 examples were delivered to the French Air Force between 1955 and 1959. That figure is the group’s reported historical count, not an independently verified production audit. Swatch Group’s Breguet history provides its account of the watches and their military context.

Why does a pilot’s chronograph need flyback?
Flyback, or retour en vol, lets the wearer reset and immediately restart a running chronograph with a single push. With an ordinary chronograph, timing a new interval generally means stopping the chronograph, resetting it, and starting it again. Flyback compresses those actions into one, which is useful when a pilot needs to time successive legs or intervals without pausing to work through separate controls. The feature is practical rather than decorative: it reduces the steps needed to begin a fresh timing interval. Its presence is one part of the military specification context, alongside legibility and a rotating bezel.

What is the difference between Type 20 and Type XX?
The spellings signal related but distinct strands. “Type 20,” in Arabic numerals, is associated with French Air Force military watches. Breguet used Roman-numeral “Type XX” for its civilian version, produced in response to demand from private pilots and chronograph enthusiasts. Swatch Group also notes Roman-numeral usage for other versions, including naval aviation examples, so the spelling alone does not identify every maker, contract, or military history.

The modern register distinction is documented for these current references; it should not be projected onto all vintage watches. Dial layout or numerals alone also cannot establish a vintage watch’s authenticity or provenance. For an individual vintage example, model-specific documentation, movement and production generation, and provenance and servicing history matter.

How did a military chronograph become a civilian line?
Breguet says demand led it to produce a civilian Type XX for private pilots and chronograph enthusiasts. That move carried the aviation chronograph into civilian use without making the military and civilian watches identical in purpose or configuration. The Arabic-versus-Roman naming distinction helps mark those strands, but it should be read alongside the specific watch’s documented history.
How does the Type 20 history continue in current watches?
Breguet and Swatch Group present the current Type 20 Chronographe 2057 and Type XX 2067 as modern watches inspired by the historical military and civilian lines. Breguet’s technical article identifies calibre 7281 in the two-register military-style Type 20 and calibre 728 in the three-register civilian-style Type XX. These are specifications for the modern references, not evidence about the movements or details of vintage examples.
