The Rolex Yacht-Master 42 reference 226659 is a 42 mm 18 ct white-gold sports watch whose black Cerachrom bezel and Oysterflex bracelet give it a deliberately less formal look. The tension is the appeal: it reads sporty at a glance, but its precious-metal case makes it a luxury object first. That is an interpretation of Rolex’s published design and specifications, not a hands-on verdict.
What is the Rolex Yacht-Master 42 reference 226659?
Rolex presented the Yacht-Master 42 in 2019. Reference 226659 pairs an 18 ct white-gold Oyster case with a black dial and Oysterflex bracelet. It is not a steel Yacht-Master: white gold is central to both its material identity and its position in the collection. Rolex’s US product page identifies the current model and its specifications; the brand’s 2019 presentation labels the launch material “BASELWORLD 2019.”
Why the design works—and what it asks of the buyer
White gold, with a deliberately restrained look
The case is precious metal, but white gold does not announce itself with the bright yellow-gold contrast many people associate with a luxury watch. Against it, the black dial and bezel insert create a muted, monochrome appearance. The likely appeal is understated luxury: the material is more exclusive than steel, while the color keeps the watch visually sporty and relatively low-key. That is a design reading, not a claim about how every wearer or observer will perceive it.
A sporty bezel on a precious-metal watch
The bidirectional bezel has 60-minute graduations and a matt black Cerachrom ceramic insert. Rolex says it can be used to calculate elapsed time, giving the example of measuring the sailing time between two buoys. The bezel therefore has a practical timing role as well as providing the watch’s strongest visual contrast. It does not, by itself, make the Yacht-Master a specialized sailing instrument or a dive computer.

Oysterflex is not simply a rubber strap
Rolex describes Oysterflex as flexible metal blades overmoulded with high-performance elastomer. The bracelet uses a patented longitudinal cushion system and attaches with a folding Oysterlock clasp and Glidelock extension system; Rolex says the adjustment can be made without tools. This construction is more involved than the phrase “rubber strap” suggests, though the published description does not establish how it feels on a particular wrist.

These figures are Rolex’s specifications, not independent measurements. In particular, the precision figure is Rolex’s stated standard after casing, and the reserve is approximate. The stated water resistance is 100 metres; it should not be read as evidence that the watch is designed for every kind of underwater use.

How the 226659 wears on paper
The 42 mm case gives this Yacht-Master a substantial stated diameter, while the black dial, ceramic bezel and elastomer-covered Oysterflex bracelet visually temper the white-gold case. That combination suggests a watch designed to move between casual and more formal settings without looking like a conventional dress watch. Actual wrist presence, comfort and perceived weight cannot be settled from the published specifications alone; Rolex’s product details cited here do not give a weight measurement.
The practical features are coherent rather than extravagant: a date with a Cyclops lens, luminous hands and markers, a timing bezel, and a bracelet adjustment system intended to work without tools. The 3235 movement’s approximately 70-hour reserve is useful when the watch is taken off for a weekend, although the reserve alone says nothing about how accurately any individual example performs over time.
