The Rolex Perpetual 1908 reference 52506-0003 keeps the proportions and small-seconds layout of a restrained dress watch, but its ice-blue guilloché dial makes it far more visually assertive than a conventional gold 1908. Set in a 39 mm polished 950-platinum case, it pairs intricate surface work with a material that Rolex describes as dense and difficult to machine and polish. The result is an unusually tactile, high-contrast interpretation of the collection—not a discreet watch in the usual sense of the word.
What is the platinum Rolex 1908?
It is Rolex’s Perpetual 1908 reference 52506-0003, a 39 mm watch with a polished 950-platinum case, ice-blue guilloché dial, small seconds at 6 o’clock and an alligator-leather strap with a platinum Dualclasp. The case combines a partly domed, partly finely fluted bezel with a domed crown. A scratch-resistant sapphire crystal covers the dial; the transparent domed case back has an anti-reflective coating. The U.S. configuration lists a matt black alligator strap with green calfskin lining and tone-on-tone stitching, attached by a platinum Dualclasp. Rolex describes platinum as corrosion-resistant, dense, and challenging to machine and polish because of its softness, elasticity and malleability. What makes the guilloché dial different?
The ice-blue dial carries a repeating geometric “rice-grain” pattern that Rolex says radiates outward from the small-seconds counter at 6 o’clock. Around the minute track is a second guilloché treatment called filet sauté. Together, the treatments give the dial depth and texture that a plain satin-finished surface would not have. The face also has Arabic numerals at 3, 9 and 12, faceted hour markers, and central hour and minute hands. Why does this 1908 read differently?
The 1908’s 39 mm case and small-seconds display retain the visual restraint associated with a classic dress watch. The dial, however, refuses to disappear: the radiating pattern catches light across most of the face, while the ice-blue tone and platinum case create a cool, coordinated palette. Platinum also makes the watch materially weighty, so the experience is not simply that of a slim, understated gold dress watch in a different color.
