The Oris Big Crown Pointer Date Calibre 473 pairs familiar pointer-date styling with a less familiar engine: a hand-wound movement with a stated five-day power reserve and an indicator on the movement side. That makes it appealing if you enjoy winding and seeing the mechanics at work. It is a less obvious fit if you want an automatic, a larger case, or more water resistance than 5 bar.

What is special about the Oris Calibre 473?

Calibre 473 is Oris’s first hand-wound movement in its Calibre 400 Series, and the first in-house manual-winding calibre the brand has brought to the Big Crown family in decades. Oris describes it as its tenth in-house calibre developed in a decade. The Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry FH reported at launch that the movement took four years to develop and shares its base with automatic Calibre 403. The FH launch report is dated February 2, 2023.

The distinctive practical detail is the power-reserve display on the bridge side of the movement, visible through the sapphire caseback. The dial remains recognizably Big Crown Pointer Date: central hours and minutes, a central date hand, and subsidiary seconds at six. Oris lists an instantaneous date, date corrector and stop-seconds as well.

How long is the Oris 473 power reserve, and is it hand wound?

Yes. Calibre 473 is hand wound, and Oris states a power reserve of 120 hours—five days—when fully wound. Its 30 mm movement runs at 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz). The five-day figure is specific to this calibre; Oris’s general manual includes an approximate 42-hour statement for manual-winding watches, which should not be substituted for the model-specific 120-hour specification. See Oris’s Calibre 473 information and its general product manual.

In everyday use, the reserve means you need not wind it every morning if you wear it regularly, but it is not an automatic movement: once it runs down, it must be wound again. The bridge-side indicator is useful for checking remaining reserve, though its placement means it is not a dial-side complication to consult at a glance.

How does the 38 mm case wear on paper?

For the cited blue-dial leather reference, 01 473 7786 4065-07 5 19 22FC, Oris specifies a 38 mm multi-piece stainless-steel case and a 19 mm interhorn width. It has a domed sapphire crystal with internal anti-reflective coating and a see-through sapphire caseback. The combination is a relatively compact stated diameter and a traditional date display, rather than a large, feature-dense sports-watch format. Actual wrist fit depends on more than diameter, and no hands-on wearing assessment is claimed here.

Water resistance and daily-use limits

Oris rates the watch to 5 bar. That is a practical everyday rating, not a dive-watch claim; a depth-equivalent should not be treated as a promise that every water activity is suitable. Check the manufacturer’s current care guidance and ensure the crown is secured as directed before exposure to water.

What does Oris say about accuracy, magnetism and service?

Oris says the Calibre 400 Series uses more than 30 non-ferrous, anti-magnetic components. For Calibre 473, the company reports that Laboratoire Dubois testing found a deviation of under 10 seconds per day after exposure to 2,250 gauss. This is a manufacturer-reported test result, not an independently reproduced test or a guarantee of the accuracy of every individual watch. Oris also recommends a 10-year service interval for the series.

What warranty applies to the Calibre 473?

The cited product listing displays a two-year base warranty. Oris states that Calibre 400 Series watches can receive a 10-year warranty when registered with MyOris. Registration is required for the extension, and the applicable terms should be checked for the buyer’s region and exact reference in Oris’s warranty and Calibre 473 information and the regional product listing.

How much does the Oris Big Crown Calibre 473 cost?

There is no single universal price established by the available Oris listings. The Finnish-language listing for the cited leather reference showed €4,400, while a listed variant showed €4,600; another regional listing showed €4,500 for a bracelet configuration. These are market-specific listed prices, not a promise of today’s price in another country. A January 2023 launch article reported €4,200 at launch, which is historical rather than a current-price guide. Check the exact reference and configuration on the Oris product page for local availability and pricing.

Which strap or bracelet options are available?

Oris regional listings show leather-strap and H-link bracelet configurations, and one listing also shows leather, textile and rubber fitting straps alongside a stainless-steel bracelet. The listed width is 19 mm. Availability, end-link fit and clasp details depend on the exact reference and market, so confirm compatibility rather than assuming that every 19 mm option fits every configuration.

Is the Oris Big Crown Calibre 473 worth it?

Its strongest case is for a buyer who wants the tactile routine of hand winding, a five-day stated reserve, and a mechanically interesting display visible through the caseback, without giving up the Big Crown Pointer Date’s central date hand and restrained 38 mm specification. The trade-offs are equally clear: winding is part of ownership, water resistance is 5 bar, and the price is a substantial luxury-watch purchase that varies by market. When comparing it with another watch, weigh winding type, reserve and indicator placement, case and strap fit, water rating, date display, warranty requirements and the local price rather than treating one specification as decisive.
