How a big-date complication works
In a common design, two rotating discs sit beneath adjacent apertures. One disc shows the tens digit, typically 0 through 3, and the other shows the units digit, 0 through 9. The movement coordinates the discs so they display the correct date together. Blancpain describes this arrangement for its Large Date, and MIDO likewise describes two separately rotating discs for its Big Date. The display indicates the date of the month; its size does not determine how the calendar handles month lengths. The cited descriptions do not establish automatic correction for 30-day months, February, or leap years. What makes a big date useful?
The straightforward reason to choose one is that a larger numeral may be easier to read at a glance. The date aperture can also serve as a prominent design feature and influence the balance of the dial. The benefit depends on the individual watch: dial contrast, aperture placement, lighting, viewing distance, and numeral size all matter. - Aperture position and dial balance: The date may sit at 6 o’clock or elsewhere; decide whether its placement works with the watch’s other dial elements.
