A perpetual calendar watch uses a mechanical program to track month lengths and the usual four-year leap-year cycle. It can move from the last day of a short month to the first day of the next, including February 29 in the appropriate years. But “perpetual” does not always mean that the watch accounts for every Gregorian calendar exception: many standard designs need correction in 2100. The exact displays and setting procedure depend on the watch’s movement and reference.
How the calendar knows when a month ends
A perpetual calendar is more than a date display that counts from 1 to 31. Its mechanical program accounts for the different lengths of the months, so the date can advance directly from a month’s final day to the first of the next month instead of showing nonexistent dates.
For example, Patek Philippe’s instructions for the Ref. 5372P describe transitions that account for months of 28, 29, 30, and 31 days. IWC explains that its mechanism recognizes differing month lengths and adds a leap day at the end of February every four years. These are descriptions of particular manufacturer designs; movements can use different mechanisms and display different information. Patek Philippe’s calendar overview and IWC’s perpetual-calendar overview describe examples.
How it handles February and leap years
In the ordinary four-year cycle, February has 29 days every fourth year. The calendar then advances from February 29 to March 1; in other years, it advances from February 28 to March 1.

The Gregorian calendar adds an exception that a basic four-year program does not necessarily encode: a year divisible by 100 is not a leap year unless it is also divisible by 400. That means 2100, 2200, and 2300 will not have February 29, while 2400 will. A standard perpetual calendar that follows only the four-year cycle will therefore need correction at a skipped century leap year.
Patek Philippe says the standard perpetual calendar described on its calendar page must be adjusted between February 28 and March 1 in 2100. Its Ref. 5372P instructions state that, if the watch is kept wound daily, it will not need correction before February 28, 2100. That horizon is specific to the cited model and operating assumption, not a guarantee for every perpetual calendar. Patek Philippe’s calendar-watch information and the Ref. 5372P instructions give those details.

Standard and secular perpetual calendars
The key difference is how the mechanism treats the century-year exception.
- Standard four-year-cycle calendar: Tracks the usual leap day every four years, but may require a manual correction in years such as 2100, 2200, and 2300.
- Secular calendar: A design that encodes the Gregorian 400-year cycle can also skip the three century leap years omitted within that period. IWC says its Portugieser Eternal Calendar uses a 400-year gear for this purpose; that feature is specific to this model, not a universal property of perpetual calendars.
IWC’s Portugieser Eternal Calendar information describes its 400-year mechanism.

What a perpetual calendar may display
“Perpetual calendar” describes a calendar function, not one fixed arrangement of indications. Depending on the watch, the display may include the date, weekday, month, year, leap-year cycle, or moon phase. Manufacturers offer different combinations, so the name alone does not tell you exactly what appears on the dial or how it is adjusted. IWC describes indications for its mechanism, while Patek Philippe’s overview covers different calendar configurations.

There is no universal setting sequence for perpetual calendar watches. Controls, procedures, and cautions are model-specific; using a crown or quick corrector without checking the instructions for the exact reference can risk an incorrect setting or damage.

- Identify the exact reference. Check the watch paperwork, case, or manufacturer records so you can find the matching manual.
- Read that manual before changing the date. Follow its instructions for the crown, correctors, and any restrictions. For example, the IWC Da Vinci Perpetual Calendar manual gives directions and cautions for that model; it should not be treated as a procedure for other watches.
- Use the manual’s correction method if the display is wrong. Do not assume that a procedure for another brand or reference applies.
A watch’s running condition also matters to the calendar’s operation. The correction horizon stated for Patek Philippe’s Ref. 5372P, for instance, is explicitly conditional on the watch being wound daily.
