An annual calendar watch automatically adjusts for months with 30 or 31 days, but it does not fully account for February or leap years. That means the date needs a manual correction once a year, around the end of February or on March 1, depending on the watch. It sits between a basic date display, which needs more frequent correction, and a perpetual calendar, which also tracks leap years.
What does annual calendar mean on a watch?
An annual calendar is a mechanical calendar complication: a mechanism that coordinates calendar displays rather than simply advancing a date number once each day. It recognizes which months have 30 days and which have 31, so it can advance the date and month correctly at those month ends.
February is the exception. Because an annual calendar does not account for February’s actual length or the leap-year cycle, its date needs to be corrected once a year. The exact correction date and setting procedure depend on the watch.
How does an annual calendar work?
A calendar mechanism must distinguish a month that ends on the 30th from one that ends on the 31st. An annual calendar adds a month-length program to make that distinction and advance the date and month display together at the appropriate month ends.

The mechanism is not identical across brands or movements. For example, Glashütte Original describes its Calibre 92 as using a month wheel and cam disc that make one revolution per year. Indentations around the disc mark 31-day months, and a small tooth advances the month ring. That is one implementation, not a description of every annual calendar.
How does it compare with a date display or perpetual calendar?
| Calendar type | What it handles automatically | Correction burden described by the source |
|---|---|---|
| Basic date display | Advances the date number, typically through 31 | Patek Philippe says a basic date display needs correction five times a year, after months shorter than 31 days. Source |
| Annual calendar | Distinguishes 30-day and 31-day months | Needs one correction a year around the end of February; it does not account for February’s full length or leap years. Source Source |
| Perpetual calendar | Accounts for month lengths and leap years | Tracks the leap-year cycle while operating, making it more comprehensive and more complex than an annual calendar. Source Source |
The practical distinction is leap-year handling: an annual calendar simplifies upkeep compared with a basic date display, while a perpetual calendar goes further by accounting for leap years. These are different complications, not interchangeable names for the same feature.
What correction does an annual calendar need?
February is treated differently by annual-calendar makers’ explanations, but the result is the same: the wearer must correct the display once a year. Blancpain describes its annual calendar as treating February like a 30-day month and says the mechanism does not take leap years into account. Blancpain’s explanation
Patek Philippe describes the general correction as taking place at the end of February. Its instructions for the referenced model specify March 1: advance the date by three days in a non-leap year or two days in a leap year. That procedure applies to that watch, not every annual calendar. Patek Philippe calendar information and instructions

- Set of 12, comes with a convenient storage pouch
- Reversible: brushed gold on one side, brushed silver on the other
- Oval calendars for watch bands fold to fit most watch bands

Use the manual for the exact reference before adjusting the calendar. Brands may specify a particular date, crown position, or control, and a procedure for one movement should not be assumed to fit another.
How manufacturers display and build the complication
Annual calendar describes what the calendar does, not a single dial layout or mechanism. Manufacturer examples show how varied the execution can be:

- Patek Philippe 5205G-013: day, date, and month appear in three apertures, alongside a moon-phase display. The manufacturer lists a self-winding movement. Product page
- IWC annual calendar: three windows show month, date, and day. IWC describes two barrels driving the three display discs and says the wearer advances the date manually through the crown once a year. IWC annual calendar
- Glashütte Original PanoMaticCalendar: uses a retrograde month display. The maker’s account of Calibre 92 says 38 hardened-steel balls, each 0.5 mm in diameter, reduce friction in the month wheel’s ball bearing; these details apply to that movement alone. Glashütte Original
For an additional sense of the variation, Patek Philippe lists 339 parts for the movement in its 5205G-013; that figure is specific to the model, not a standard part count for annual calendars. Patek Philippe 5205G-013 specifications

What to consider when choosing one
The annual correction is only one part of living with a particular watch. Compare the exact reference’s setting instructions, display legibility and layout, movement type and power reserve, case dimensions, water resistance, and price. Those specifications vary by model; the complication name alone does not establish them.
