You can see your live zone during a cardio-focused workout, review estimated time in each zone afterward, and manually edit the limits for zones 2–4. Apple does not publish the precise formula or all five zone thresholds in its public guidance, so the displayed bands should not be treated as a disclosed, universal calculation.
What are Apple Watch heart-rate zones?
Heart-rate zones are five estimated intensity bands expressed as percentages of maximum heart rate. Apple says they are “automatically calculated and personalized using your health data.” A date of birth in the iPhone Health app is required for the zones to be calculated. Apple’s guide to viewing Heart Rate Zones does not state the exact automatic equation or provide every zone’s percentage boundaries.

Apple Developer documentation identifies age and resting heart rate as examples of health metrics that may inform automatically generated workout zones. It does not establish the exact Apple Watch formula or thresholds. A familiar formula from another training system should therefore not be assumed to describe Apple’s method. Apple’s documentation on workout-zone data also advises apps to account for the origin and configuration of zone data; automatically generated and manually configured zones may not be interchangeable across apps or workout records.

During a workout
For a cardio-focused workout, turn the Digital Crown until the Heart Rate Zones view appears. It can show your current zone, current heart rate, time in that zone, and average heart rate. Which views are available depends on the workout type and the views configured for it. Apple’s Heart Rate Zones instructions describe this live display.

How do I change my heart-rate zones on Apple Watch?
On Apple Watch, open Settings > Workout > Heart Rate Zones. Choose Manual, then enter lower and upper limits for zones 2, 3, and 4. Apple’s guide identifies those three zones as editable; it does not describe manually setting the limits for zones 1 and 5. Check Apple’s current instructions if the labels differ on your installed software.

What do Apple Watch workout metrics mean?
The Workout app can display active calories, heart rate, and distance, but the available metrics and layouts vary by workout category and selected view. Outdoor Run provides a useful example of how much detail a specific activity can offer. Apple’s running-metrics guide documents these views:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems| Outdoor Run view | What it can show |
|---|---|
| Metrics | Current heart rate, rolling mile, average pace, and distance |
| Metrics 2 | Cadence, stride length, ground contact time, and vertical oscillation |
| Heart Rate Zones | Current heart rate, time in zone, and average heart rate |
| Segment and Split | Segment or split number, pace, distance, and current heart rate |
| Elevation | Recent elevation profile, elevation gained, and current elevation |
| Power | Recent power profile, current power, and cadence |
| Activity Rings | Move, Exercise, and Stand |
Running-form and effort measures
- Cadence: steps per minute.
- Stride length: distance covered per running step.
- Ground contact time: how long a foot is in contact with the ground.
- Vertical oscillation: torso movement per step.
- Running power: work output expressed in watts.
These measures describe different aspects of a run; they are not interchangeable indicators of effort. Heart rate, pace, distance, and the running-form metrics may also depend on different sensor inputs and conditions.

How does Apple Watch measure heart rate and estimate calories?
Apple says the watch measures heart rate continuously during a Workout session and for three minutes after it ends to determine workout recovery rate. Heart rate and other collected information contribute to calorie estimates. Apple’s technical description says workout calorie estimates use workout-specific algorithms and sensor inputs—which may include heart rate and geolocation—to estimate activity energy expenditure. Calories are estimates, not direct measurements. Apple’s heart-rate guidance and its technical description of heart rate, calorimetry, and activity explain these processes.
How can I improve workout measurement quality?
- Wear the watch snugly on top of your wrist during workouts, as Apple recommends for heart-rate measurement.
- Calibrate the watch to improve distance, pace, and calorie measurements.
- Keep personal information such as height, weight, sex, and age current in Health; Apple says these details inform calorie calculations.
Fit and calibration can improve measurement quality, but they do not turn estimated values into exact measurements. Apple’s technical paper describes a validation approach involving a metabolic-cart reference and activity-specific models; it does not provide a numerical accuracy statistic in the material cited here. Apple’s measurement guidance covers fit and calibration.

Where can I review other workout metrics?
Workout history is available in Fitness on iPhone. To understand a particular figure, check the activity type and the selected workout view rather than assuming every workout records or displays the same metrics. Apple’s guide to getting started with the Workout app describes starting workouts and viewing available workout information.
