How Apple Watch Sleep Apnea Detection Works: Series 10, Series 9, and Ultra 2

Apple Watch sleep-apnea notifications use wrist movement during sleep to estimate nightly Breathing Disturbances and look for a repeated pattern over a 30-day period. A notification can flag signs associated with moderate-to-severe sleep apnea, but it is not a diagnosis; receiving no notification does not rule out sleep apnea.

Which Apple Watch models support sleep-apnea notifications?

Apple identifies Apple Watch Series 9, Series 10, and Ultra 2 as supported. Its current support information also lists Series 9 or later, Ultra 2, and SE 3, subject to compatible software, iPhone, region, and setup requirements. Apple does not establish that one supported model detects sleep apnea more accurately than another.

Model Support What to know
Apple Watch Series 9 Supported Requires compatible software and setup.
Apple Watch Series 10 Supported You do not need to buy Series 10 solely to get the feature if you already have another supported model.
Apple Watch Ultra 2 Supported Requires compatible software and setup.
Apple Watch Ultra, first generation Not listed among the supported models Do not assume the original Ultra supports the feature based on its name.

How the feature works

During sleep, the Watch’s accelerometer monitors small wrist movements associated with interruptions in normal respiratory patterns. Software uses that movement data to derive nightly Breathing Disturbances values. The feature is not described as an oxygen-saturation test or as directly measuring airflow.

The Health app classifies nightly values as elevated or not elevated and lets users review trends over one month, six months, or one year. Some disturbances are normal, so an elevated reading on one night is not itself a diagnosis.

Apple’s notification feature looks for a repeated pattern over a 30-day evaluation period. Apple says users must log at least 10 nights in that period; consistently elevated disturbances may lead to a notification about signs associated with moderate-to-severe sleep apnea. The supplied research does not establish a specific elevated-reading percentage threshold, so the feature should be described in Apple’s terms rather than as a fixed numerical cutoff.

How to set up sleep-apnea notifications

  1. Make sure you have a supported Apple Watch and a compatible iPhone with current software.
  2. Set up Sleep in the Health app and turn on Track Sleep with Apple Watch.
  3. On iPhone, open Health, go to Respiratory, and choose Sleep Apnea Notifications. Follow the on-screen instructions, including confirming your birth date and whether you have previously been diagnosed. Menu labels can vary by software version or region.
  4. Wear the Watch to sleep on at least 10 nights within a 30-day period to meet Apple’s minimum data requirement.

The feature is intended for people aged 18 or older who have not already been diagnosed with sleep apnea. Apple says it is not intended to diagnose, treat, or aid in managing sleep apnea. If you already have a diagnosis, do not use it as a management tool.

Where to find Breathing Disturbances and reports

In the Health app, the Respiratory section shows Breathing Disturbances and trend views over one month, six months, or one year. If a notification appears, it identifies a period when potential sleep apnea occurred and provides educational information. Apple describes a shareable PDF report containing three months of disturbance data and notification details, which you can discuss with a healthcare provider.

What a notification does—and does not—mean

A notification is a reason to discuss the result with a clinician, not a diagnosis. The FDA describes the feature as a software-only risk-assessment notification that looks for patterns suggestive of moderate-to-severe sleep apnea, rather than a standalone diagnostic tool. The FDA database lists Apple’s feature under 510(k) K240929 with a substantially equivalent decision dated September 13, 2024; calling that an FDA “approval” would be imprecise.

Emergency SOS lets you call for help with the press of a button.* Check In automatically notifies a loved one when you’ve arrived at your destination.*

No notification is not an all-clear. Apple says not all people with sleep apnea will receive one, and the FDA filing states that absence of a notification is not intended to indicate absence of sleep apnea. If you are concerned or believe you may have sleep apnea, talk with a doctor whether or not your Watch sends an alert.

Can the original Apple Watch Ultra use sleep-apnea notifications?

Apple’s supported-model information names Ultra 2, not the first-generation Ultra. Check Apple’s current compatibility information for any changes.

What should I do if I receive a notification?

Review the notification and its report, then discuss them with a healthcare professional. Apple Watch does not diagnose or determine treatment.

What if I have symptoms but receive no notification?

Do not treat the absence of a notification as proof that you do not have sleep apnea. Talk with a doctor if you are concerned.

Bottom line

Series 9, Series 10, and Ultra 2 use accelerometer movement during sleep to estimate Breathing Disturbances. Apple evaluates repeated readings over 30 days and requires at least 10 nights of data. A notification can prompt clinical follow-up, but it is not a diagnosis—and no notification does not rule out sleep apnea.
