The Royal Oak Offshore is less a single watch formula than a platform for experimentation. Since its 1993 launch, Audemars Piguet has varied its size, materials, complications, colors and collaborations—while keeping the collection’s imposing, sporty character intact. The clearest way to understand that creative range is to follow specific references and the changes they introduced.
Why the Offshore began as a provocation
The design began with Emmanuel Gueit’s studies in 1989, not with a plan to make a conventional, smaller variation on the Royal Oak. Audemars Piguet’s chronology dates his first sketches to April 19, 1989, and describes an early concept with a 42 mm case, visible rubber gaskets and substantial thickness. When the Offshore launched in 1993, AP linked its inspiration to powerboat racing and to a younger, adventurous audience. Raphaël Balestra, AP’s Manager of Heritage & Archives, described it as “a trend-setting watch for the 1990s, targetting a younger, adventurous generation.” Audemars Piguet’s Royal Oak Offshore collection page presents it as a bold, sporty and robust line. Its scale and visible construction were part of the point, not details designed to disappear.
That approach initially divided opinion, AP recounts in its Royal Oak Offshore history. Younger enthusiasts later embraced the watch, and the collection expanded substantially in the 2000s. Its evolution shows that “Offshore” describes a design attitude, not a fixed size, material or complication.
How the collection expanded beyond the original chronograph
AP broadened the family early, changing both who could wear an Offshore and what it could do. In 1996, the chronology records 30 mm women’s models and 38 mm calendar watches alongside the 42 mm family; the 25770 also introduced a 42 mm chronograph on a leather strap. In 1997, the range added a perpetual calendar, time-zone models, gem-set watches and multiple dial colors.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
These models make clear why the collection cannot be reduced to an oversized chronograph. A calendar or time-zone reference changes the watch’s function; a gem-set case or vivid dial changes its visual character. The family grew through different combinations of scale, display and finish rather than one linear progression toward a single “best” Offshore.
Materials changed the Offshore’s look and feel
Material experiments gave the collection another way to depart from its steel origins. AP’s chronology records titanium in 1998, rubber in 2001, carbon in 2004 and ceramic in 2008. These dates mark milestones in the historical range; they do not mean every material is used on every current model.

| Year and example | What changed | What the evidence establishes |
|---|---|---|
| 1998: 25721TI | Titanium exterior, including bracelet | AP’s heritage record gives a weight of 150 g, compared with about 220 g for the steel model, and records 2,902 titanium examples from 1998 to 2014. AP’s 25721TI model record. |
| 2001: 25940SK | Rubber-covered bezel and strap, with a Méga Tapisserie dial | AP’s chronology identifies this as a material and dial milestone. AP’s Offshore history. |
| 2004 | Carbon | AP’s chronology records carbon as a collection material milestone. AP’s Offshore history. |
| 2008 | Ceramic | AP’s chronology records ceramic as a collection material milestone. AP’s Offshore history. |
The titanium example demonstrates the practical distinction as well as the visual one: the AP-recorded figure is 150 g versus about 220 g for steel. Those weights refer to the specific 25721TI and steel model in AP’s heritage records; they should not be generalized to every titanium and steel Offshore.
Collaborations gave the Offshore a cultural identity
The 1999 Royal Oak Offshore End of Days, reference 25770SN, was a 500-piece limited edition made with Arnold Schwarzenegger for the film. AP’s chronology identifies it as the start of the collection’s celebrity limited editions. François-Henry Bennahmias, AP CEO from 2012 to 2023, later said the collaboration “helped to put the collection on the map, especially in the street culture scene.” Partnerships with sports figures and other cultural collaborators followed.

A collaboration reference is therefore more than a different dial or case treatment: its production context is part of what distinguishes it from a standard collection model. The End of Days’ 500-piece count describes that historical edition, not the availability or scarcity of other Offshore watches.
What the 30th-anniversary models show
For the collection’s 30th anniversary in 2023, AP featured two watches that illustrate how far the original idea could be carried. One was a 42 mm black ceramic selfwinding chronograph powered by Calibre 4404, an integrated flyback chronograph movement. The other was a 43 mm flying-tourbillon chronograph, limited to 100 pieces. AP’s 30th-anniversary feature documents these particular models; their specifications and edition status should not be read as applying to the full collection.

How to compare Royal Oak Offshore references
Start with the reference number and the actual watch, rather than assuming that the collection name guarantees a particular size, function or fit. AP’s historical range includes examples in 30, 38, 42, 44 and 48 mm, but historical sizes do not establish which models are currently offered new.
- Scale: Check the stated diameter for the exact reference. The difference between a 30 mm calendar model and a 42 mm chronograph is substantial; the collection label alone does not tell you which profile you are considering.
- Material: Steel, titanium, gold, rubber, carbon and ceramic produce distinct appearances and wearing characteristics. Compare the case, bezel and bracelet or strap separately; a reference may combine materials.
- Complication: Chronographs are only one part of the history. AP’s chronology also records calendar, perpetual-calendar, time-zone and diver-timing examples, while the anniversary line includes a flying-tourbillon chronograph.
- Dial and strap: Tapisserie variations, dial color, bracelet, leather and rubber affect both the look and the intended use. Confirm details against the specific reference rather than assuming a collection-wide standard.
- Production context: Distinguish regular collection models from finite collaborations and anniversary editions. A historical edition count does not establish current availability or present-day scarcity.
Interchangeable straps: check the reference and hardware
AP says the latest-generation Offshore interchangeable strap system is integrated into the case studs and buckle. Some legacy models can be adapted with a specific conversion kit that must be purchased and fitted. Compatibility is therefore not universal: verify the exact reference and required hardware with AP or a qualified seller before buying a strap.

What the sales history can—and cannot—tell you
AP’s historical records provide a sense of the collection’s growth, but they are not a guide to current stock or resale value. The original 25721ST record states that 7,308 units were sold over its 23-year market life. AP’s Offshore history also gives collection sales of 1,339 watches in 2000 and 14,011 in 2010, comparing those figures with Royal Oak sales for the named years. These are historical totals reported by AP, not current production figures or evidence of investment performance.
