Breguet’s Souscription watch paired a deliberately simple, single-hand display with a novel way to finance orders: customers paid a quarter of the price in advance. The design and payment model helped attract new customers after Abraham-Louis Breguet returned to Paris in 1795, making the watch evidence of both horological judgment and commercial skill—though the available sources do not establish that it alone restored his business.

What was Breguet’s Souscription watch?

It was a large pocket watch developed after Breguet returned to Paris in May 1795 and reorganized his business. The Louvre places the subscription watch among the new models he developed during this rebuilding period. (Louvre)

Breguet’s historical account describes a watch about 61 mm across, with an enamel dial, one hand and a simple movement. Customers ordered it by paying one-quarter of the price upfront. The brand says the watch was reliable and affordable, attracted a new clientele, and that approximately 700 were made in gold or silver. That production figure is the company’s historical estimate, not an independently audited count. (Montres Breguet)

How did the one-hand design work?

The single hand was a practical design choice, not evidence that Breguet lacked technical ability. The dial was divided into five-minute graduations; Fondation Haute Horlogerie says this allowed the time to be read to within one or two minutes. That is an estimate of usability, not a laboratory measurement of the watch’s timekeeping accuracy. (Fondation Haute Horlogerie)

In ordinary use, the hand’s position against those graduations let the wearer estimate the time without the added complexity of a minute hand. The large format and enamel dial are documented features of the original model; the sources do not quantify how much the simplified movement changed manufacturing cost or production speed.

How did the subscription payment help Breguet’s business?

Paying a quarter of the price when placing an order meant customers committed money before receiving the watch. That structure gave Breguet funds at the point of order, while the relatively straightforward design offered an accessible product for a new clientele. Breguet’s account describes the watches as successful; the Louvre places them within the wider reorganization of his Paris business after 1795. Together, those facts support a picture of commercial ingenuity as well as watchmaking skill, but they do not establish the watch’s total financial impact or prove it was solely responsible for the business’s recovery. (Montres Breguet; Louvre)

Breguet also received a gold medal at France’s first National Industrial Exhibition in 1798, according to the Louvre. That recognition belongs to the broader story of his work and reputation, rather than serving as proof that the Souscription alone earned the award. (Louvre)

What connects the original watch to Breguet’s later work?

Breguet says the original Souscription calibre was used for his first tact watches, linking the design to another product in his watchmaking history. The relationship is a documented connection between the calibre and those early tact watches; it does not, by itself, establish that every technical feature was carried over unchanged. How does the Classique Souscription 2025 compare?

The 2025 Classique Souscription translates the historic idea into a modern wristwatch. Its modern specifications and retail context should not be mistaken for details of the original pocket watch.

The modern product page identifies the reference as 2025BH/28/9W6 and presents the watch as inspired by the original and part of Breguet’s 250th-anniversary program. These are details published on the brand’s page as accessed October 8, 2026; check with a point of sale for current price and availability. (Montres Breguet)

Breguet announced that the Classique Souscription 2025 received the Aiguille d’Or Grand Prix at the 2025 Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève. In that announcement, CEO Gregory Kissling called the award a “tremendous honor” and connected it to the brand’s 250th anniversary. This is a corporate statement about the modern watch and award, not historical testimony about the original model. (Montres Breguet)

What should collectors know about records and authenticity?

Breguet distinguishes registration in its Breguet Records from authentication. The brand says that after examination, its museum may confirm a watch’s authenticity and provide certain recorded historical information, such as specifications, sale date or first owner. Registration alone should not be treated as proof of authenticity. (Montres Breguet)

In a November 2025 sale announcement, Breguet said the first Classique Souscription 2025, number 250, would be offered at Sotheby’s alongside nearly seventy privately collected watches. That announcement provides a dated snapshot of collector interest; it does not establish the sale’s outcome, current inventory or availability of original Souscription pocket watches.
