I can’t identify your grandfather’s particular watch from the title alone: there’s no photograph, description, inscription, or serial number to examine. Clear photos and exact transcriptions of its visible markings are the best starting point. Those clues can narrow down what you have, but a name or number by itself may not prove who made the complete watch or when it was made.
What to share for an identification
Start by documenting what you can see without opening the watch. Take sharp, well-lit photos and include:

- The full front, including the dial and hands.
- The outside of the case, including the back and sides.
- Any visible signatures, inscriptions, numbers, or stamps. Photograph them close enough to read.
Also say whether it is a pocket watch or wristwatch, and share any family history you know, such as who owned it or when it may have been passed down. Transcribe each marking exactly, preserving punctuation and noting letters or digits you cannot distinguish. Don’t silently correct an uncertain reading.

Names on the dial or movement
A name is a useful search lead, but it may belong to a retailer who sold or signed the watch rather than the maker of its movement. Some watches carry a seller’s signature as well as, or instead of, the manufacturer’s. Verify a name against other evidence before attributing the watch to a particular maker. The Pocket Watch Database’s marks reference explains why signatures and other marks need interpretation.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Movement, case, and model numbers
Keep every number with the part where it appears. A movement serial and a case serial are different clues: a case number may identify the case maker and need not match the movement number. A model or grade number generally refers to a movement design, not necessarily to the complete watch. Don’t treat one number as a universal watch identifier. The marks reference discusses these distinctions.
Maker-specific serial-number tables can sometimes help estimate a production period, but their completeness and reliability vary by maker. Treat an online lookup as an estimate to check against other evidence, not as proof of an exact year.

Hallmarks and case stamps
Hallmarks and material stamps can provide clues about a case’s material or origin. Their meaning depends on the country and period, so a stamp should be interpreted in context. Likewise, a case maker’s mark identifies the case maker; it does not automatically identify who made the movement. The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s records illustrate how marks work together: its Daniel Delander watch record discusses a movement signature, serial number, and case-maker marks, while its George Graham watch record uses hallmarks and a serial sequence in its interpretation.

Should you open the case?
Don’t pry open an unfamiliar watch or force a resistant case back. The movement and inside of the case may carry additional identifying marks, but reaching them can require removing the case back. Patek Philippe states in its official FAQ: “The case back of your timepiece must be removed to see the movement number.” Its guidance is specific to Patek Philippe watches; for an unfamiliar watch, having a qualified watchmaker inspect it is a cautious way to avoid damaging it. If you recognize the brand, its official support route may also help you find the appropriate service contact.

Which identification route should you use?
| Route | What it can establish | What it cannot establish alone |
|---|---|---|
| Exterior photos and visible inscriptions | Visible design, dial signature, and exterior case marks. | Hidden movement markings or, by themselves, the watch’s maker, exact date, authenticity, or value. |
| Inside-case and movement inspection | Additional movement and case marks that are not visible from outside. | A definitive identification without interpreting the marks in context. |
| Maker-specific records or a qualified specialist | Interpretation of serials, signatures, and other clues in combination. | A guaranteed exact date or attribution when records or evidence are incomplete. |
These routes complement each other: a specialist or relevant archive can interpret evidence that photographs help you document. No single visible name, stamp, or serial should be expected to answer every question.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What can be concluded about this watch so far?
Nothing specific about its maker, model, date, authenticity, or value is established without evidence from the watch itself. To request a useful identification, provide the exterior photos, exact readings of visible markings, watch type, and any family history you know. Leave any hidden movement details to a qualified watchmaker unless they are already visible.
