Cold, wet surf helped shape Finisterre’s original gear: the company says it began in 2003 with a windproof, waterproof fleece made to warm surfers after they left the water. Its current cold-water wetsuits extend that practical focus, with warmth and durability among the qualities Finisterre says they are designed to provide. Cornwall helps explain the context; it does not mean every product is made for one remote stretch of coast.
Why Cornwall matters to Finisterre’s origins
Cornwall’s Atlantic-facing surf culture gives Finisterre’s origin story its setting. Founder Tom Kay says the company began in 2003 to make innovative products for hardy British surfers and people whose lives revolve around the sea. The first product was a windproof, waterproof fleece made in Devon to help cold surfers warm up after a session. Kay has described wanting to advance product development in an industry he felt was lacking.

The practical problem came first: surfers leaving cold water needed warmth and protection from wind. Finisterre presents functionality, longevity and more responsible manufacturing as ambitions behind that first garment. That history offers a useful way to understand the company’s gear priorities, but it is the brand’s account of its own beginnings—not independent evidence that every design decision was dictated by Cornwall’s conditions. What the landscape can—and cannot—tell you
Cornwall’s exposed Atlantic coast is relevant to cold-water surfing, but the county is not climatically uniform. The Met Office describes regional maritime influences and variation in exposure; its South West England report gives an approximate gale-force-day count for exposed coastal Cornwall comparable to the cited comparison area. That regional context helps explain why wind protection and warmth are meaningful concerns, but it cannot establish the conditions at every surf spot or on every day. How that product logic appears in cold-water wetsuits
Finisterre explicitly links its wetsuit heritage to Cornwall’s Atlantic coast. It describes its cold-water suits as designed for warmth and durability, and says they use Yulex natural rubber and recycled fabrics. These are the company’s product and materials descriptions; they are not independent performance tests or proof of a particular environmental outcome. Finisterre cold-water adventure gear
Choose thickness for the water you usually surf
Finisterre’s guide recommends matching suit thickness to the water temperature most commonly encountered. Its suggested bands overlap, so temperature is a starting point rather than a universal rule. Fit, activity, exposure and personal comfort also affect the choice.

How Finisterre describes its wider materials choices
Wetsuits are one part of a broader materials framework. Finisterre sorts materials into four categories—Leading Choice, Preferred, Limited Use and Not Accepted—and says it weighs environmental, social and performance factors alongside sourcing constraints. The framework draws on industry practice, including Textile Exchange’s Fibre and Materials Matrix.
Finisterre reports that 92% of the materials by weight in its 2025 collection met its Preferred standard or higher. The company says another 5% were Limited Use and 3% did not meet its standards. These figures describe how Finisterre classifies its materials; they are not an independent certification or a measure of the collection’s total environmental impact. Repair and resale extend the idea of useful gear
Keeping clothing in use is another part of Finisterre’s stated approach. In its 2025 impact reporting, the company says its Lived and Loved repairs team mended over 2,900 items, while its resale platform kept 2,000 items in use. Cornwall Council had previously recognized the company for circular practices including in-house repairs, taking back items, resale and recycling. The council recognition offers local corroboration of those practices, while the item counts are Finisterre’s own reporting. Cornwall’s surf setting helps make sense of Finisterre’s emphasis on warmth, wind protection and gear intended to last. For a wetsuit, start with the water temperature you most often face, then consider fit, how freely you need to move, your exposure and your tolerance for cold. Treat the brand’s material and construction descriptions as product information, not as independent proof of performance or environmental impact. The landscape informs the story and priorities; your conditions should guide the choice.
