Check the model or style number and battery type on the caseback before buying a replacement. Timex recommends having a watch retailer or jeweler replace the battery, and Expedition models do not all use the same battery or opening method.
Should you change the battery yourself?
Timex recommends professional battery replacement. Its instructions warn: “CHANGING THE BATTERY YOURSELF MAY RESULT IN DAMAGE TO THE WATCH.” A retailer or jeweler is the safer choice if the watch matters to you, the model is unclear, or you need advice about service and water resistance.
DIY replacement is best treated as a model-specific repair, not a standard procedure for every watch labeled Expedition. Timex says battery-removal methods differ and advises consulting the watch’s manual: Timex’s battery-changing guidance.
Identify the exact model and battery
- Read the caseback. Note the model or style number and look for the battery type or size. Timex’s instructions direct owners to check the caseback for the specific battery information: Timex W219 battery instructions.
- Find the matching manual. Search the Timex manuals page by watch name, product number, or feature. Confirm that the manual matches your watch rather than relying on the Expedition name alone.
- Verify the cell before purchasing. Timex’s manual index lists, for example, SR626SW for Expedition Digital Compass, CR2032 for Expedition Grid Shock and Expedition Shock, and CR2016 for several Expedition Shock and Trail variants. These examples apply only to the named models; they are not interchangeable recommendations for all Expedition watches.
Choose professional service or a model-specific DIY repair

One Timex manual’s procedure is not universal
For the movement covered by its W219 instructions, Timex says to place the watch face-down, separate both halves of the band with a small flat screwdriver, then remove four caseback screws with a 00 Phillips screwdriver. The caseback must be reinstalled in the same direction or the buzzer element will not function. Timex also cautions that turning the watch over while removing the screws or caseback can dislodge small electrical connectors. These directions apply only when that manual matches your watch.
Stop if the watch does not match the manual
- The caseback, fasteners, or band arrangement differs from the instructions.
- You cannot confirm the battery type or exact model.
- You are unsure how to keep the caseback oriented or avoid disturbing internal parts.
In those cases, take the watch to a retailer, jeweler, or Timex service route. Do not assume a watch remains water-resistant after it has been opened and closed; the cited Timex materials do not establish that outcome for an unspecified Expedition model.
