How to evaluate a vintage-watch listing
Start by asking the seller for evidence that lets you compare the watch with the claims in the listing. A few attractive exterior photos are not enough to assess a vintage piece.
- Identity: Compare the stated brand, model or reference, movement and serial evidence with clear photographs. For OMEGA, a serial is usually engraved inside the caseback and on the movement; that is a place to begin, not proof by itself. - Originality: Ask whether the dial, hands, crown, bracelet, movement and other parts are original to the model and era. eBay allows certain replacement parts on an authenticated vintage watch if the original manufacturer no longer makes the part, but known replacements should be disclosed. That exception does not make every alteration harmless or value-neutral. eBay Authenticity Guarantee for Watches.
- Condition: Request sharp, consistent photographs and a candid description of wear, damage, repairs and modifications. Check that the photos support the written description. eBay says its authentication process compares the item with the listing and can flag discrepancies. eBay’s watch verification details.
- Function and service: Ask when the watch was last serviced, whether it runs, and what service records are available. A seller’s statement that it runs does not establish its timekeeping accuracy or remaining service life.
- Intended use: Do not assume a vintage watch is safe around water because it once had a water-resistance rating. eBay cautions that “Vintage timepieces and many used watches may not be water resistant to their original rating.” Consult a watchmaker before exposing one to water. eBay’s watch verification details.
For a Lord Elgin, do not rely on unsupported online identification shortcuts. Have a qualified specialist assess the movement, case and listing evidence; no brand-specific official identification guidance is established here.
What eBay’s watch authentication does—and does not—cover
eBay describes a physical, multi-step review at an authentication facility, where an eligible watch is checked against listing details and included collateral before delivery. If the partner cannot verify authenticity or finds that condition does not match the listing, eBay says the watch is not sent to the buyer and the buyer receives a refund, subject to the applicable policy. The key limitation is explicit: “The eBay authentication partner does not verify the timekeeping accuracy of your watch.” The service also does not provide a warranty. A watch may pass the check and still need adjustment or service. eBay’s watch verification details.
Check whether the specific listing qualifies
As described in eBay’s US program guidance accessed in 2026, eligible watches in the Wristwatches and Pocket Watches categories priced at $2,000 or more receive automatic coverage under the stated rules. Qualifying watches priced from $500 to $1,999.99 can have an optional authentication service purchased at checkout for $80 plus applicable taxes. These are US program terms, not a guarantee that every watch at those prices qualifies. Eligibility can depend on marketplace, buyer and seller locations, shipping method, category and customization. Before paying, confirm that the actual listing displays the Authenticity Guarantee indicator and review the checkout terms for your location and transaction. Also check the listing’s return policy: some authenticated purchases can be final sale. For imports, account for any applicable customs duties and shipping costs. Program terms can change, so the listing and checkout are more useful than assuming coverage from the price alone.

Compare more than the asking price. Include shipping, possible import duties, any optional authentication fee, and a realistic allowance for inspection or service. No current inventory or market-price evidence establishes that a particular listing is a bargain; the condition and work required can change the cost substantially.

Mechanical watches are delicate, and an older watch may need service even if it is running. eBay advises consulting a watchmaker before water exposure and notes that servicing may be needed. For TAG Heuer models more than 20 years old, the brand describes a vintage service route through specialists at its Swiss manufacture, intended to preserve original aesthetics while renovating the mechanism. A practical decision before you buy
- Gather evidence: Ask for clear photos of the dial, case, movement, caseback, serial or reference markings, and any included papers or accessories. Request details on known replaced parts, damage, function and service history.
- Compare claim with evidence: Look for inconsistencies between photos, description and stated model. Treat a serial number as one clue among several, not an authentication verdict.
- Verify the protection: Confirm the listing’s Authenticity Guarantee indicator, eligibility and checkout terms; read its return or final-sale conditions.
- Budget for ownership: Add delivery, duties where applicable, optional authentication and likely watchmaker costs to the purchase price.
- Pause when evidence is thin: If originality, condition or service needs remain unclear, seek an independent watchmaker’s view before committing rather than treating marketplace authentication as a substitute.
