Before ordering a newly released watch from an independent brand, verify the specifications, fit, seller terms, written warranty and a realistic repair route. A short track record is a reason to ask more questions—not, by itself, proof that the watch or brand is unreliable.
Start with the exact watch specifications
Look for a model-specific specification sheet rather than relying on broad descriptions such as “automatic” or “water-resistant.” A 2026 independent-brand buying guide recommends checking the following details; it is a practical buyer checklist, not an independent testing standard: watch buying guide.
- Movement: Identify the calibre, and check what the brand says about its functions and other relevant details. “Automatic” describes how a movement is powered; it does not identify the calibre.
- Dimensions: Check case diameter, thickness, lug-to-lug length and lug width.
- Materials: Confirm the case and crystal materials, and any stated material details for the bracelet or strap.
- Water resistance: Note the exact rating, any stated testing information and the maker’s guidance for intended use.
If a material detail is absent, ask the seller to confirm it in writing. Specifications help you compare watches and assess whether the stated design suits your intended use; they do not, on their own, establish how a particular watch performs.
Check fit and what comes in the box
Case diameter alone cannot tell you how a watch will sit on your wrist. Compare the dimensions, especially lug-to-lug length and thickness, with a watch you already find comfortable. Check the lug width too: it affects strap compatibility, but does not tell you which strap or bracelet the seller includes.

Before ordering, confirm the included configuration and whether sizing or adjustment help is available. Understand the water-resistance claim
Read the rating alongside the maker’s instructions for the specific model. Look for information about how the watch was tested and what use the brand says it is intended for. If that guidance is missing or unclear, ask before treating the rating as a promise that the watch is suitable for a particular activity.

Water resistance can change over time. Victorinox states, “The water resistance of your watch cannot be guaranteed indefinitely,” and provides care guidance for its own watches: Victorinox watch service. Rado likewise advises checking water resistance and describes annual testing for its watches: Rado customer service. These manufacturers’ guidance is useful context, not a universal activity chart or a service schedule for another brand’s model.
Read the seller, delivery and return terms before paying
Confirm who is taking your order and what happens after payment. In particular, check the total price, shipping cost, estimated dispatch or delivery timing, and whether duties or taxes may apply. For a pre-order, look for the stated production and fulfilment timeline and what the seller says happens if it changes.

Read the applicable return and cancellation terms before placing the order. Rights and protections depend on your country and transaction; do not assume a particular return period, tax treatment or pre-order protection applies everywhere. Save a copy of the product page and the seller’s terms as they appeared when you ordered.
Read the warranty as a set of conditions
Do not stop at the warranty duration. Check what defects are covered, what is excluded, how to start a claim, which documents are required and who pays shipping. Confirm whether the warranty applies where you live and whether it depends on buying from a particular seller.

Warranty terms differ by brand. For example, Victorinox conditions its warranty on purchase from an authorised retailer and a completed, dated and stamped certificate; Rado describes its own authorised sales channels and advises customers to retain warranty documents. Those are company-specific examples, not requirements that apply to every independent watch.

A warranty is only one part of long-term support. Find out who handles repairs, where the watch must be sent, how shipping is arranged, and whether the brand can explain the movement and parts situation. Ask whether service costs are published or can be estimated. Availability of service networks, parts and maintenance guidance varies by brand and model.

Established manufacturers’ service pages can show the kinds of care and support information a buyer might look for, but their arrangements do not establish what an unrelated independent brand offers. Victorinox and Rado publish guidance for their own products; check the independent brand’s own written terms and ask specific questions if its repair route is unclear.
Judge launch evidence carefully
Some new releases have limited public history. Consider the evidence available about the finished watch and the seller’s ability to fulfil and support orders, rather than treating the brand’s age as a verdict.
- A missing named movement or incomplete specification sheet leaves important claims harder to assess.
- Renders without photographs of finished watches make it harder to judge the delivered product’s appearance and finishing.
- Few or no independent reviews mean there is less outside evidence about the finished watch; that alone does not show it is poor or fraudulent.
- No clear repair process is a practical support question to resolve before paying.
These are prompts to request evidence, wait for clearer information, or decide that the uncertainty does not suit you. They are not proof of fraud. A 2026 buying guide flags similar gaps as reasons for caution, but it is a commercial publisher’s checklist, not a standards body or independent laboratory assessment: watch buying guide.
Compare candidate watches on the same terms
If you are considering more than one release, use a consistent checklist instead of comparing one watch’s headline feature with another’s warranty or price.
