Louis Vuitton describes enameling at La Fabrique du Temps as a demanding craft in which enamel meets kiln heat to bring out color. The House names three techniques across its craft and watch descriptions—plique-à-jour, paillonné, and champlevé—but does not publish a full workshop recipe for making an enamel dial. Its examples show how enamel can become part of a watch’s visual design alongside automata, engraving, and mechanical complications.
Where enameling fits at La Fabrique du Temps
La Fabrique du Temps is in Meyrin, in Switzerland’s canton of Geneva. Louis Vuitton says the manufacture brings together designers, engineers, and artisans, with capabilities spanning components, movements, and cases. Its overview also names creations from Louis Vuitton, gérald genta, and DANIEL ROTH.

The House places enameling among its Métiers d’Art, alongside engraving, guilloché, miniature painting, and gem-setting. Louis Vuitton’s description emphasizes both the craft’s technical demands and the visual result: “In an embodiment of the encounter between enamels and kiln heat to reveal the brilliance and intensity of colours, enameling is a demanding art that requires highly technical skills to be acquired over several years by the master enamelers of La Fabrique du Temps Louis Vuitton.” This is the House’s corporate description, not a quotation attributed to an individual artisan. What the named enamel techniques look like
The official descriptions distinguish the techniques mainly by their construction and appearance. They do not provide enough detail to compare firing sequences, durability, or how much workshop time each requires.

| Technique | What Louis Vuitton describes | Watch example in the official material |
|---|---|---|
| Plique-à-jour | A gold cloisonné structure highlights transparency and contrast. | No specific watch example is identified in the reviewed descriptions. |
| Paillonné | Fine flecks of gold leaf embellish layers of enamel. | No specific watch example is identified in the reviewed descriptions. |
| Champlevé | Named as the enamel treatment on the dial of the Tambour Arty Automata. | The Tambour Arty Automata. |
The first two descriptions explain visual effects rather than giving a step-by-step account of how an artisan builds, fires, or finishes a dial. Champlevé appears in the description of a finished watch, without a full process explanation. Louis Vuitton’s Métiers d’Art page Louis Vuitton’s automata watches page
How enamel appears in two Louis Vuitton watches
Tambour Arty Automata
Louis Vuitton describes this watch’s dial as “entirely rendered in volumes of luminous champlevé enamel.” The automata page also identifies seven animated elements and a one-minute tourbillon. The example connects the enamel treatment to a dial designed as part of a moving, mechanically complex display; it does not establish that every enamel dial at the manufacture uses champlevé.

Tambour Galactique
The Tambour Galactique is described as combining a minute repeater and automata mechanism, with enameling and engraving brought together with a mechanical movement. The description presents enamel as one element in a broader high-watchmaking composition rather than as a standalone craft demonstration. Louis Vuitton’s automata watches page

What the manufacture’s quality checks establish
Louis Vuitton says its timepieces undergo technical, functional, and aesthetic checks over eight days before leaving the manufacture. The listed tests include shock resistance, water resistance, magnetic fields, and everyday wear. This is manufacture-wide quality-control context: the overview does not say these tests assess enamel specifically or explain how an enamel dial is inspected.
