Moticon OpenGo sensor insoles measure plantar pressure and foot movement during walking, running, balance tasks, and other activities. They are professional research equipment—not ordinary comfort insoles—and can collect data outside a fixed laboratory. Validation studies support some uses, especially gait timing, more strongly than others: absolute force, high-impact movement, and some spatial or balance measures need careful interpretation. They do not independently diagnose injuries or prove that an athlete will avoid injury or perform better.

What Moticon OpenGo measures

Moticon describes OpenGo as “professional measurement tools for sensing foot dynamics.” The system pairs measurement insoles with an app, desktop software, and related services for gait and movement research, including mobile measurement beyond a laboratory. That makes it a specialized measurement system rather than a consumer insole meant primarily for comfort.

According to the manufacturer, the insoles contain 16 plantar-pressure sensors and a six-axis inertial measurement unit (IMU). They transmit data wirelessly, can record data onboard, provide access to raw sensor data, and offer adjustable sampling from 10 to 100 Hz. Moticon also lists calibration, synchronization, and multiple insole sizes. These are manufacturer specifications; the available configuration and workflow should be confirmed with the company.

Pressure sensors capture how load is distributed under the foot, while the IMU contributes motion data. Together, those signals can help researchers examine patterns during movement. A measurement is not itself a medical interpretation: what it can establish depends on the variable, task, comparison equipment, and population being studied.

How well do the measurements agree with other systems?

Validation is measure-dependent. OpenGo should not be treated as interchangeable with a force plate, pressure walkway, or another instrumented insole for every outcome.

Walking, running, jumping, and balance: 2016 comparison

Thomas Stöggl and Alex Martiner’s 2016 Journal of Sports Sciences study compared OpenGo with PedarX sensor insoles and AMTI force plates. Sixteen healthy participants performed walking, running, jumping, imitation drills, and balance tasks. For walking, running, and jumping, OpenGo detected ground-contact and flight times similarly to AMTI, and the force-time curve shapes were comparable.

Its pressure sensitive capabilities ensure accurate data collection in various conditions, enhancing its functionality for smart wearables.
  • Multi Function: Supporting diverse functional requirements, this flexible film pressure sensor can be customized for different applications. Whether used in sports, healthcare, or everyday activity tracking, its versatile design allows for tailored development to meet specific user needs.
  • Pressure Sensing: Acting as an artificial analog sensor device, this flexible film pressure sensor is widely applicable in smart wearable products such as pressure sensitive insoles. It accurately detects pressure distribution, providing valuable insights into foot health and performance.
  • Widely Versatile: Capable of real time gait information monitoring, including running posture, landing method, cadence, landing time, vacancy rate, and knee load index, this membrane pressure sensor enhances the understanding of movement patterns. It supports improved analysis and feedback for users.

However, OpenGo recorded force impulses 13–34% lower than AMTI in that comparison. Differences and limitations mattered more during fast, high-force movements, and balance center-of-pressure results differed in the medio-lateral direction. The findings support cautious use for temporal measures and relative or field comparisons, but they are a reason not to assume that OpenGo gives interchangeable absolute force values—especially in high-impact analysis. The study’s conclusion was that, with awareness of its limitations, OpenGo can be applied in clinical and research settings to evaluate temporal, force, and balance parameters across movement types.

Walking in people with Parkinson’s disease: 2024 study

A 2024 conference study by Watkinson and colleagues, whose authors were affiliated with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, assessed OpenGo against a pressure-sensitive walkway in 12 people with Parkinson’s disease. The authors reported strong agreement for walking tasks, but weaker agreement for spatial metrics; clinically important differences remained possible. They also called for further work on insole-derived center-of-pressure measures and on more real-world conditions. These results apply to the study’s small participant group and protocol, not automatically to every population or walking scenario.

Applied fracture research: 2025 dissertation

A 2025 Saarland University dissertation used OpenGo to investigate plantar-pressure distribution during stance in patients recovering from lower-leg and ankle fractures, reporting differences among fracture groups. This demonstrates a research application. It does not establish that the insoles can diagnose an individual fracture, predict healing, or improve recovery outcomes.

What the evidence can—and cannot—say about injury and performance

OpenGo can collect foot-pressure and movement data that researchers may use to study gait, balance, or loading patterns. The cited studies provide evidence about measurement agreement for specific tasks; they do not demonstrate that wearing the insoles prevents injuries, improves athletic performance, or identifies an injury in an individual. No injury-reduction rate, performance-improvement figure, or diagnostic-accuracy statistic is established in the cited evidence.

For a study or assessment, match the system to the question rather than treating “foot tracking” as one single capability. The relevant distinction is whether the intended outcome is timing, spatial gait metrics, force magnitude, pressure distribution, or balance—and whether the goal is to compare patterns or obtain an absolute value.

How to judge whether OpenGo fits a measurement task

  • Define the outcome: Decide whether you need gait timing, spatial measures, force magnitude, pressure distribution, or balance data.
  • Check the evidence population and protocol: Agreement reported for healthy participants performing specified tasks or for people with Parkinson’s disease walking under a study protocol may not transfer to another group or activity.
  • Separate relative comparisons from absolute values: The 2016 AMTI comparison found similar timing and curve shapes but lower force impulses with OpenGo; the 2024 walkway study found weaker agreement for spatial metrics.
  • Account for setting and movement: Mobile measurement can extend data collection beyond a fixed lab, but fast, high-force tasks and real-world conditions may pose different validation demands.
  • Confirm technical workflow: Ask about the current sampling options, synchronization, raw-data access, sizes, calibration, recording, and software needed for the intended protocol.
