How the dial tells time
Designed by illustrator Kristof Devos, the dial turns a relaxed poolside scene into a functional display. The reclining figure’s extended leg indicates the hour, while the small duck floating nearby indicates the minutes. The pool’s tile marks serve as hour markers, helping orient the leg’s position.
This is an unconventional way to read a watch: instead of conventional hands, the illustrated elements do the pointing. Mr Jones Watches presents the design as an interpretation of a line it attributes to Lin Yutang: “If you can spend a perfectly useless afternoon in a perfectly useless manner, you have learnt how to live”.
