There is no single reset interval for every moonphase watch: it depends on the movement’s precision. Vacheron Constantin says its simple moonphase displays need adjustment once every three years, while its high-precision displays need it once every 122 years. Those are the maker’s figures for its own categories, not universal standards. For your watch, follow its manual.
Why reset intervals vary
A moonphase display tracks the lunar cycle, which is slightly shorter than the 29.5 days often used as a rounded approximation. IWC gives a lunation as 29 days, 12 hours, 44 minutes, and 2.88 seconds. A display whose mechanism approximates that cycle will gradually drift; a more precise mechanism drifts more slowly.

Vacheron Constantin publishes two different correction intervals: once every three years for its simple moonphase versions and once every 122 years for its high-precision displays. The maker does not state a publication year for those figures. They illustrate how much the interval can differ by movement design; they do not establish how often another brand or model needs correction. Vacheron Constantin’s explanation of moonphase watches
When your watch may need correction
It has stopped
If the watch stops, its moonphase indication may stop advancing too. When you restart it, the display can be out of step with the current lunar phase. Check it against a reliable moonphase calendar and correct it using the model’s instructions.

The display was set incorrectly
A moonphase indicator can remain out of sync if it was set to the wrong phase or advanced by the wrong number of days. If you are unsure whether it is accurate, compare the displayed phase with a calendar before making an adjustment.
How to set a moonphase display
The broad approach in Patek Philippe’s guidance is to move the lunar disk until the moon is centered in its full form, count the days since the most recent full moon, then advance the indicator once for each elapsed day. Include the day you make the adjustment in the count. The precise controls and safe setting window are model-specific, so this is not a universal button-by-button procedure.

- Read your watch’s manual first. Identify the corrector or crown procedure and the permitted setting window for your model.
- Find the most recent full moon. Use a reliable moonphase calendar to determine how many days have elapsed.
- Set the display to full moon. Advance the lunar disk until the moon appears centered and full, following the manual’s instructions.
- Advance for elapsed days. Operate the designated corrector once for each day since the full moon, counting the setting day as well.
- Check the result. Compare the displayed phase with the calendar and consult the manual if the indication does not match.
Patek Philippe’s general guide describes this sequence, and its 5204R manual gives a similar procedure. That manual specifies a stylus for the relevant push pieces; use that instruction only for the model it covers, not as advice for every watch. Patek Philippe instructions for use

Do not assume every moonphase watch can be adjusted at any time or with the same type of control. Longines advises owners to consult the instruction manual and avoid adjustment during transition periods. Find your model’s allowed setting window and corrector procedure before operating it.
