There is no universal interval: it depends on the watch’s moon-phase mechanism. Vacheron Constantin says its simple displays need manual adjustment once every three years, while its high-precision displays need it only once every 122 years. Baume & Mercier recommends resynchronizing its moon-phase watches about every two to three years. These are manufacturer-specific figures, not rules for all watches. Check the manual for your exact model before adjusting it.
Why adjustment intervals differ
A moon-phase display advances with the watch mechanism, but how closely its cycle tracks the lunar cycle depends on its design. Manufacturers therefore give different correction intervals. Ordinary timekeeping accuracy alone does not tell you how often the moon-phase display needs correction.

For example, Vacheron Constantin distinguishes between simple and high-precision displays: it says the former need manual adjustment every three years and the latter every 122 years. Baume & Mercier gives an approximate two-to-three-year resynchronization interval for the moon-phase watches covered by its FAQ. The companies do not state publication years for these guidance pages, so treat the figures as their product-specific guidance rather than a universal specification. | Manufacturer and display type | Stated adjustment guidance |
|---|---|
| Vacheron Constantin, simple moon-phase display | Manual adjustment once every three years |
| Vacheron Constantin, high-precision moon-phase display | Manual adjustment once every 122 years |

How to find the right interval for your watch
- Identify the exact model. Consult the watch’s user guide or manufacturer’s instructions; correction controls and procedures vary.
- Look for the stated correction interval. If the guide gives one, follow that model-specific advice. Do not substitute another brand’s interval.
- Check the setting procedure and any restricted time window. Find which corrector, crown position, or sequence the maker specifies, and whether it limits when adjustments may be made.
Patek Philippe explicitly directs owners to consult the relevant user guide because the procedure depends on the watch. Its moon-phase setting instructions provide an example, not a universal method.

- 40mmmm stainless steel case
- 8 inch brown two- piece quick release
- blue dial
- mineral glass lens
- water resistant up to 50 meters
Example: Patek Philippe’s full-moon reference method
For the procedure described on its general setting page, Patek Philippe instructs owners to position the display at full moon, count the days since the last full moon—including the day of setting—and press the corrector once for each day. Its 2024 user instructions for a particular watch say that pressing the designated push piece at 4 o’clock advances that model’s moon-phase disk by one day. The corrector location and operation apply to that model, not to moon-phase watches generally. Patek Philippe’s setting page; 2024 user instructions.
What to do if the watch has stopped
A stopped watch may need its moon-phase display reset as well as its time. Because the display advances with the mechanism, do not assume it resumed at the correct lunar phase. Use the model’s own manual to restore the display and time in the prescribed sequence; the available manufacturer instructions do not establish one reset procedure that works for every watch.

Check for a restricted correction window
Baume & Mercier advises owners of its relevant watches not to operate the date or moon-phase correctors from 21:30 to midnight. That restriction is brand-specific; it is not a universal watchmaking rule. Check your own manual for any protected changeover period before using a corrector. Baume & Mercier’s FAQ.

Correcting a moon-phase display is a setting or resynchronization task, not automatically a repair or a routine service. If the display will not advance or cannot be set as the manual describes, seek help from the manufacturer or a qualified watchmaker rather than forcing a control.
