They worked alongside OMEGA’s broader on-site operation; they were not interchangeable technologies, and computer vision did not simply replace judges.
Three systems, three different jobs
OMEGA was Official Timekeeper for all 329 Olympic events across 32 sports at Paris 2024. The company called it its 31st time in that role since 1932. OMEGA reported bringing 350 tonnes of equipment and 550 timekeepers to Paris to measure action and help determine official results.
| Layer | Primary purpose | What it supplied |
|---|---|---|
| Photofinish | Help determine close finishes | A composite finish-line image used for official results in athletics and track cycling |
| Computer vision | Track movement and support analysis or review | Sport-specific measurements and visualizations, and in some instances support for official results |
| Vionardo graphics | Communicate information to broadcasters and viewers | Real-time timing, scoring, results, and athlete information |
The figures for OMEGA’s deployment are the company’s own reported totals. The technology specifications below are from Swatch Group’s official Paris 2024 overview.
How did OMEGA decide close finishes?
For athletics and track cycling, Swatch Group said the Scan’O’Vision ULTIMATE photofinish camera’s composite image would determine official results. The camera was specified to capture up to 40,000 digital images per second at the finish line, with dedicated colour sensors. Swatch Group described it as the next generation of OMEGA photofinish technology, replacing the Scan’O’Vision MYRIA, which it said could record 10,000 images per second.

That frame-rate specification describes the camera’s stated capability; it is not an accuracy score or an independently measured error rate. The published overview does not give a Paris-specific accuracy benchmark.
What did computer vision measure?
OMEGA’s computer vision combined camera systems with AI models trained for particular sports. Swatch Group said the systems could track athletes and other objects without physical tags. Their role varied: they generated live metrics and viewing enhancements, supported replay and judgment calls, and in some cases contributed to official results. The listed applications illustrate specific uses, not a claim that the system operated in every sport or made every ruling.

- Beach volleyball: High-definition cameras tracked players and the ball, producing measures such as distance covered, speed, jump height, and shot types.
- Diving: Tracking supported a three-dimensional reconstruction and measures including airtime, entry speed, and board clearance for judges to review.
- Tennis: Tracking the player, racket, and ball enabled measurement of reaction time after a returned serve.
- Pole vault: The system automatically measured the gap between the athlete and the bar.
- Gymnastics floor: Tracking supported analysis of whether an athlete left the marked area, as well as jump height, airtime, and body position.
These outputs gave officials and viewers additional information; the published description does not establish that an AI model independently replaced the relevant human judges.
How did timing and scoring reach viewers?
Vionardo supplied real-time 4K UHD television graphics showing live timing and scoring, final results, and athlete information. Graphics could be tailored to rights-holding broadcasters’ languages. OMEGA said it deployed systems at competition venues and placed some at the International Broadcast Center (IBC) for remote productions. Olympic Broadcasting Services (OBS) then supplied the graphics to media rights-holders.

What OMEGA’s video and figures do—and do not—show
OMEGA President and CEO Raynald Aeschlimann described the partnership as a way to support athletes’ moments in Paris, saying: “OMEGA knows how hard these athletes have trained, and the many hours they have dedicated to their careers. It’s our honour to support them in Paris and be part of their history-making moments.” That is the company’s statement about the partnership, rather than an independent evaluation of system performance.
OMEGA also displayed timing equipment, including the electronic starting pistol and Scan’O’Vision ULTIMATE, in a pavilion at Parc de Bercy with an interactive timing exhibit. The pavilion’s announced dates and opening hours were for the 2024 Games; they do not establish that it remains open.
