For a vintage IWC with a strong 1990s identity, the Portugieser Rattrapante ref. 3712 is the guide author’s standout choice: its restrained dress-watch styling conceals a split-seconds chronograph. The GST Aquatimer ref. 3536 is the contrasting pick for a more practical, sport-oriented watch. The Portugieser refs. 5441, 5240 and 3714 round out a decade in which IWC revived a historic design and pursued ambitious complications. These are considered selections, not an objective ranking; the right choice depends on the complication, style and condition of the individual watch.
Which IWC watches stand out from the 1990s?
The picks below reflect the models highlighted in Fratello Watches’ 2021 guide, rather than a complete catalogue of IWC’s decade. They span anniversary editions, complicated Portugiesers, a landmark chronograph and a purpose-built diver. The reference numbers are especially useful when searching listings, but they do not establish the originality or condition of any particular watch.
| Model | Period and defining feature | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|
| Portugieser ref. 5441 | Introduced for IWC’s 125th anniversary in 1993; limited edition of 1,750 pieces, as reported by Fratello Watches in 2021 | A collector drawn to the Portugieser’s anniversary-era return |
| Portugieser Minute Repeater ref. 5240 | Dated to 1995; 550 pieces across platinum, rose gold and yellow gold, as reported by Fratello Watches in 2021 | A buyer seeking a striking complication and precious-metal case |
| Portugieser Rattrapante ref. 3712 | Introduced in 1995; 41 mm stainless-steel launch version with split-seconds chronograph, as described in the 2021 guide | A dress-oriented watch with an unusual chronograph function |
| Portugieser Chronograph ref. 3714 | Followed in 1998; the guide calls it IWC’s biggest-selling watch to that point | A simpler chronograph expression of the Portugieser design |
| GST Aquatimer ref. 3536 | Aquatimer introduced in 1998 within the GST line, which the guide dates to 1997 | A sport or dive-watch choice rather than a dress-oriented Portugieser |
Model details and historical claims in this comparison are drawn from Fratello Watches’ 2021 buying guide. The stated edition totals are model-specific figures, not a measure of current availability.
Why the Portugieser Rattrapante ref. 3712 is the standout
The 3712 combines an elegant, legible Portugieser-style dial with a split-seconds chronograph: a complication that lets the wearer time an intermediate event while a chronograph is running. The 2021 guide describes its launch version as a 41 mm stainless-steel watch with a white dial, gold hands and numerals, and an extra pusher at 10 o’clock for the split-seconds function. That pusher and the additional mechanism distinguish it from a conventional chronograph.

- Sapphire crystal protects watch from scratches
- Water-resistant to 50 M (165 feet)
The guide attributes the hand-wound calibre 76240 to IWC and describes it as based on the Valjoux 7760, with Richard Habring adding the split-seconds module. This is the movement account given by that guide. Buyers should have the movement in a specific example verified by a qualified watchmaker, especially before relying on a listing’s description.
How the other Portugieser references differ
Ref. 5441: the anniversary-era choice
IWC introduced the Portugieser 5441 for its 125th anniversary in 1993, in a limited edition of 1,750 pieces according to Fratello’s 2021 guide. Its significance here is as part of the decade’s Portugieser story: a historically styled watch associated with the line’s return, rather than a complicated model like the 3712 or 5240.

Ref. 5240: a minute repeater in precious metal
The 1995 Portugieser Minute Repeater ref. 5240 was reported as a 550-piece edition: 50 platinum, 250 rose-gold and 250 yellow-gold watches. A minute repeater chimes the time on demand, making this a very different proposition from a chronograph. The edition breakdown is from Fratello’s 2021 account; verify the case material and reference against documentation for any watch being considered.
Ref. 3714: a more straightforward chronograph
The 3714 followed the Rattrapante in 1998. Fratello’s guide describes it as IWC’s biggest-selling watch up to that point. That sales superlative belongs to the guide’s account; it is not a current sales ranking. For a buyer, the useful distinction is functional: the 3714 is the standard Portugieser chronograph in this selection, while the 3712 adds the split-seconds capability.

What makes the GST Aquatimer ref. 3536 different?
The Aquatimer 3536 belongs to the sportier side of 1990s IWC. Fratello dates the GST line—named for Gold, Steel and Titanium—to 1997 and the 3536 Aquatimer’s introduction to 1998. The guide describes steel and titanium examples, and black and silvered dials among the steel versions. It is the natural contrast to the dress-oriented Portugiesers: a diver-style watch for someone prioritizing a robust sports-watch look and timing bezel over a formal dial or a chiming complication.
How the decade’s complicated watches fit IWC’s history
The 1990s selections sit within a broader period of visible investment in complications. IWC’s official chronology dates the Da Vinci perpetual calendar’s debut to 1985, the Grande Complication to 1990, and Il Destriero Scafusia to 1993. The company says the 1990 Grande Complication included a minute repeater designed by Dominique Renaud and Giulio Papi. IWC describes Il Destriero Scafusia as, at the time, “the most complicated watch in the world”; that is the company’s historical characterization, not an independently established present-day superlative. See IWC’s official timeline and its Time Shapers account.

IWC’s late-1980s and 1990s output also included jewelry watches. Its press material identifies the yellow-gold, diamond-set Lady Da Vinci ref. IW8435 as an example of that tradition. It provides useful context for the breadth of the period, though it is not one of the principal picks in the 2021 guide. See IWC’s account of the Da Vinci collection.

- HISTORY IN YOUR HANDS | Wear a World War II–era watch inspired by those used by USAAF pilots during one of humanity’s most challenging periods. These aviation watches were essential tools in American aircraft, helping airmen navigate long missions. This watch connects you to real people, courage, and untold stories from history.
- VINTAGE DESIGN COMBINED WITH MODERN TECHNOLOGY - This watch has a Highly Accurate Quartz Movement, three-hander with luminous hands, 42 mm wide round stainless-steel case with mineral crystal. This luxury piece has a water resistance of 10 ATM (means apron 100 meters waterproof for swimming or snorkeling).
- DESIGNED BY EXPERTS – This watch has been created to closely reflect the original timepieces used by USAAF pilots during World War II. Faithful to the historic design, the steel case back IS engraved with period-style production and navigation markings inspired by original specifications.
- COLLECTOR'S EDITION - Expand your collection or historical display by adding similar watches to those worn by the real protagonists from all around the world during World War II. Each watch tells the story of a country's soldiers and the tragedy of war. Each of them corresponds to a limited series, of which only 500 units have been produced and engraved with the corresponding numbering (001/500, 002/500...).
- GIFT BOX INCLUDED - Receive your watch protected by a nice cloth watch pouch, which comes inside a luxurious box. Perfect to give as a pleasant surprise to a loved one. All package includes a brief description of the watch's history and technical features and the factory warranty.
- Choose the function and style. Decide between the dress-oriented Portugiesers and the sportier GST Aquatimer. Within the Portugiesers, distinguish the Rattrapante’s split-seconds function from the 3714’s standard chronograph and the 5240’s minute repeater.
- Check size, material and configuration. The 3712 launch version is described as 41 mm; try one on if possible rather than assuming the measurement will suit your wrist. For the 3536, confirm whether the case is steel or titanium and which dial variant is present. For the 5240, check that the stated precious-metal case matches the reference and supporting documentation.
- Establish originality. Ask for clear photographs of the dial, hands, case, movement and reference or serial markings. Compare the actual configuration with reliable reference information, and have uncertain components assessed by an independent watchmaker familiar with vintage IWC.
- Review condition and service evidence. Request service invoices or records, ask what work was performed and when, and clarify whether the watch has been tested for the functions it is meant to perform. For a complicated watch, a movement inspection is particularly valuable.
- Check provenance and seller protections. Look for coherent ownership and service documentation where available. Confirm the seller’s reputation, written return terms, payment protections and what happens if an independent inspection finds a material discrepancy.
- Compare current listings, not old price guides. The euro ranges in the 2021 Fratello article are historical estimates, not current valuations. Asking prices, completed-sale evidence and availability can change; compare like-for-like examples by reference, material, dial, condition, completeness and service history before deciding what a specific watch is worth.
