Outlier’s menswear story began with a practical contradiction: trousers that looked like business-casual slacks but could work like cycling pants. Founded in New York City in 2008, the company has carried that blend of everyday styling and performance materials into a broader city-and-travel clothing concept. Its products show how one brand has explored technical menswear; the available evidence does not establish that Outlier changed the industry as a whole.
What Outlier set out to solve
Outlier identifies Abe Burmeister and Tyler Clemens as its co-founders and 2008 as its founding year. A 2012 profile in Pomona College Magazine traced the original trouser idea to a familiar urban problem: Burmeister wanted business-casual slacks that could function like cycling pants. With help from a local patternmaker, he made an early pair in a durable, water-repellent stretch fabric from Swiss textile mill Schoeller.

The premise was not simply to make athletic clothing look more formal. It was to adapt performance materials associated with outdoor apparel and sportswear to garments intended for ordinary city life. That combination—conventional trouser styling with mobility and weather-minded utility—gives context to why Outlier became associated with technical pants.
How the original pants expressed that idea
Outlier’s archived OG Classics page calls the trousers its original garment and describes them as optimized for bike-to-work while remaining versatile beyond a commute. The archive lists four-way stretch, a breathable doubleweave and water resistance, while explicitly noting that the fabric is not waterproof. It describes the OG Classics as made in New York City with Swiss fabric.

The archive covers 2009–2020 and is not shoppable, so it documents a historical product rather than proving current availability. Its details nevertheless make the design logic concrete: the goal was to combine a trouser-like appearance with comfort and useful performance properties, not to turn the garment into specialized cycling kit.
Why iteration mattered to the design
In the 2012 profile, Burmeister described product development as intensive and iterative: “Everything goes through multiple iterations.” He also explained the reason for making small initial runs: customer feedback from people using garments in unpredictable real-world situations could reveal things that development alone would miss. As he put it, “You don’t get the full range of feedback until you have customers in the wild putting it through all kinds of crazy situations.”

That account offers a snapshot of Outlier’s process at the time, not proof that every practice has continued unchanged. The company’s current design statement still emphasizes experimentation and materials, saying it values “new functionalities” over novelty. Read together, the sources suggest a recurring design interest—finding practical uses for materials and garment constructions—while leaving the continuity of particular production methods unestablished.
What the current city-and-travel direction looks like
Outlier now describes its clothing as performance apparel for city and travel, with an emphasis on durability, breathability, experimentation and freedom of movement. Those are the company’s own descriptions, rather than independently verified performance findings. Its current Futureslimworks pants offer a specific example of the materials-led approach.

Outlier provides a useful example of technical menswear becoming part of an everyday wardrobe: the early bike-commute trouser paired a familiar silhouette with stretch and water resistance, while a current product applies performance fabric to city and travel pants. The historical archive and current product page show a company continuing to explore that intersection in its own clothing.

They do not establish how much Outlier influenced other brands, how widely its approach was adopted, or whether it caused broader changes in menswear. “Changing the face of menswear” is therefore best understood as an interpretation of Outlier’s design path, not a quantified claim about the industry.
