How Pixel Watch Faces, Complications, Tiles, and Phone Customization Work

A face is the main display, complications place information on it, and tiles are swipeable panels. Here’s how to customize each on a Pixel Watch.

A Pixel Watch face is the main screen; complications show supported information or shortcuts in designated spots on it; tiles are separate panels you reach by swiping. You can browse and customize faces on the watch or in the Pixel Watch app on your phone, while tile setup and some feature-specific edits follow their own steps.

What’s the difference between a face, a complication, and a tile?

  • Watch face: The main display you see when you look at the watch. You can choose a design and, depending on the face, adjust its colors and layout.
  • Complication: A small piece of information or an app shortcut placed in a supported spot on the face. Weather and step count are examples. The face needs a suitable slot, and the relevant app or data must be available.
  • Tile: A separate, swipe-accessible panel for a feature or action. It is not part of the face; swipe from the face to reach the tile carousel.

Use a complication when you want information visible at a glance on the face. Use a tile when you want a separate panel or shortcut. What you can display depends on the face, app, software version, account, and region.

  1. Touch and hold the current watch face.
  2. Browse the available faces and select one to use, or choose the edit option for the current face.

In the Pixel Watch app on your phone

  1. Open the Pixel Watch app and go to Watch faces.
  2. Choose a face from the gallery.

The phone app lets you browse, apply, and edit supported face options, including colors and complications. It does not make every watch-face setting available for every design.

Feature examples and requirements

Weather

Google says Pixel Weather is compatible only with Pixel Watches running Wear OS 6 or newer. On supported watches, Weather or UV Index can be added as a tile, and weather or UV Index can be used as a face complication. Weather and related features are not available in every country or language, so a missing option may reflect regional availability as well as software requirements.

Google Home

Google Home for Wear supports complications that provide quick access to device controls. Editing watch Favorites is a phone-assisted process: start on the watch, choose Open on Phone, then edit and save through the phone notification and Google Home app. Favorites on the watch do not sync with Favorites in the mobile Home app.

Choosing what belongs on the face or in a tile

When setting up a particular feature, consider where you want to access it and what the watch supports:

  • Need a quick glance? Look for a compatible complication slot on your chosen face.
  • Need a separate panel or action? Check whether the feature offers a tile.
  • Need a specific layout? Compare the face’s available complication slots and editing options.
  • Can’t find a feature? Check the required Wear OS version, app installation, account type, and country or language availability.
  • Prefer phone setup? Face selection and supported face edits are available in the Pixel Watch app; certain tasks, such as Google Home Favorites editing, explicitly hand off to the phone.
