That is the practical meaning behind the phrase “performance at any cost” in Field Mag’s profile of founder and sole designer Kyle Siegel: a solution-led design philosophy, not proof that Raide disregards cost, safety, or other constraints.
What Raide’s “performance at any cost” ethos means
Field Mag describes Raide as a company founded in 2023 for “objective-focused” athletes pursuing a time, summit, or new distance. Siegel’s stated aim is to make products for human-powered movement in the mountains. Rather than begin with a price target, trend, or predetermined number of products, he says he wants each brief to address a real problem and work with an athlete.

Siegel contrasted that approach with his earlier product-management experience at The North Face, recalling that “Products started with a price point and a trend and a box that it had to fit in.” For Raide, he said, “My box for product to check is solving a problem and working with an athlete instead of against an athlete.” He also summed up the ambition this way: “I know that we can build something better if we have the resources to do it.” These are Siegel’s views as reported in Field Mag’s profile, updated August 13, 2026, not an independent assessment of the outdoor-gear industry.

How the design process works
- Identify a problem. It may come from Siegel’s own experience with gear or from an athlete’s account of what is not working.
- Define the use case with the athlete. The intended activity and its demands shape the solution, rather than a fixed product category alone.
- Build and revise prototypes. Athlete feedback leads to further versions; Siegel says he sets no ceiling on how many prototypes a product may require.
- Keep iterating toward a workable solution. The profile presents the process as fast and collaborative, but does not publish a standard development schedule or independent performance testing protocol.
The company’s approach is not simply “make it lighter.” The examples in the profile show different priorities—stability and breathability in a ski-mountaineering pack, and enough room for food, camping gear, and water in a multiday-race fastpack.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Products and athlete collaborations in the profile
From ski-pack frustration to the LF 40L
Field Mag says frustration with his own ski gear became a catalyst for Siegel during a May 2022 trip to Mount Rainier. The first Raide product was the LF 40L ski pack; the profile says a later 30-liter follow-up won awards, without naming them in the material summarized here.
A broader mix of ski, running, and apparel gear
The profile also names the LF 5L running vest, the Heavyweight Hoodie, described as 450 gsm French terry cotton, and the Thermal Dispersion Tee. The range suggests Raide’s problem-led work spans technical packs and apparel, rather than a single activity or product type.

Anna Gibson’s ski-mountaineering pack
For ski-mountaineering athlete Anna Gibson, the profile describes a minimal, breathable, stable pack made with monomesh and Dyneema ripstop over perforated foam. Gibson said Siegel sent versions to her locations as she approached competition; she returned feedback and the pack was revised. She described it as “the fastest product development I’ve ever witnessed or heard of,” adding that the work took a few weeks.

Field Mag reports that Olympic competition rules kept Gibson from using the bespoke pack because it had not been on retail sale for the required six months. That is the profile’s account; the rule is not independently verified here against an Olympic source.

Des Linden’s multiday-race fastpack prototype
For marathoner and ultrarunner Des Linden’s 2026 Marathon des Sables, the profile says a planned 15-liter pack was enlarged to 20 liters to carry food, camping gear, and water. Field Mag reports an empty prototype weight of 290 grams and says Linden logged more than 30 hours of testing in one week. The article describes the route as about 270 kilometers (168 miles) and reports that Linden experienced no chafing during the race. These are figures and athlete experiences reported in the interview feature, not independently measured or controlled test results. Linden said, “Once I put on the initial prototype, I knew I would be using the Raide.”
At the feature’s publication, the fastpack was expected in early 2027. That was a dated forecast, not confirmation that it has since gone on sale.

What the profile does—and does not—establish
The article offers a close account of Siegel’s philosophy and selected collaborations, not a head-to-head gear review. It does not provide standardized comparisons with other packs, independent test results, or a complete current product and availability list. The prototype’s reported weight and Linden’s experience should be read in that context.
Field Mag also says Raide manufactured in Vietnam at the time of its report, and that Siegel visited the factory multiple times per year and tested samples there. The profile does not establish whether manufacturing arrangements have changed since publication.

How to judge a pack for your own objective
A design story can explain how a product came about, but it cannot determine whether a pack suits a particular outing. Compare packs against the demands of your activity and carry:
Quick Recap
- Activity and capacity: Match the pack’s intended use and volume to the equipment, food, water, or overnight kit you need to carry.
- Weight and fit: Consider the loaded pack, not just its empty weight, and assess how it sits on your body.
- Stability and access: Check whether the load stays secure during your movement and whether essential items are reachable.
- Breathability: Consider ventilation in the conditions and intensity you expect.
- Safety or event requirements: Confirm that required equipment and any competition rules are compatible with the pack before relying on it.
