How Rolex Became a Major Player in Watch Retail by Acquiring Bucherer

Rolex’s Bucherer acquisition moved the watchmaker into large-scale multibrand retail. Here are the announced terms, the Certified Pre-Owned connection, and the questions the deal leaves open.

Rolex’s acquisition of Bucherer put the watchmaker inside a large, multibrand retail and after-sales network—not just a chain of Rolex boutiques. Rolex announced the deal on 24 August 2023, describing Bucherer as operating more than 100 sales outlets worldwide. Rolex said Bucherer would retain its name and run independently, and that its collaboration with other official retailers would remain unchanged.

What did Rolex acquire?

Rolex announced its decision to acquire Bucherer on 24 August 2023. The company said the integration would take effect after approval by competition authorities. The announcement described Bucherer’s then-existing footprint as more than 100 sales outlets worldwide: 53 distributed Rolex and 48 distributed Tudor. Bucherer also served as an official after-sales centre for both brands. Rolex’s announcement is the source for those figures; they describe the footprint at the time, not a confirmed current count.

The significance is the combination of retail ownership and operational reach. Bucherer is a multibrand retailer, so the acquisition gives Rolex a place inside a business selling watches beyond Rolex and Tudor, as well as a role in a network that sells and services its watches.

How does the deal change Rolex’s retail position?

Area Before the acquisition After the announced integration
Ownership Bucherer was an independent retailer. Bucherer would be part of the Rolex group after competition-authority approval, according to Rolex’s 24 August 2023 announcement.
Retail scope Rolex relied principally on independent authorized retailers, while Bucherer sold Rolex and Tudor alongside other brands. Rolex would own a major multibrand retail operation; Bucherer’s assortment includes brands beyond Rolex and Tudor. Fratello’s 2023 report discusses this multibrand context.
Customer lifecycle Bucherer distributed Rolex and Tudor and provided official after-sales service for both, as stated in Rolex’s announcement. That retail and service role sits within the acquired operation. Separately, Rolex’s Certified Pre-Owned program adds a formal route for eligible used Rolex watches through participating official retailers.
Other authorized retailers Rolex’s sales network included retailers outside Bucherer. Rolex said collaboration with those other retailers would remain unchanged; the announcement does not establish how commercial treatment has worked in practice since.

The comparison distinguishes an ownership change from a public promise about continuity. The first is the strategic shift; the second is Rolex’s stated plan, not evidence that every retailer’s conditions or experience stayed identical.

What did Rolex say would stay the same?

Rolex said Bucherer would keep its name, continue to operate independently, and retain its management team. It also stated: “The fruitful collaboration with the other official retailers in our sales network will remain unchanged.” That is the company’s position in its 24 August 2023 announcement. It should be read as a stated arrangement, not as proof of unchanged stock allocation, commercial terms, or outcomes for every independent retailer.

Why does Certified Pre-Owned matter to the retail story?

Rolex’s Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) program makes the retail role extend beyond new watches. Under Rolex’s May 2025 announcement, eligible watches are second-hand Rolex models at least two years old, sold by participating Official Rolex Retailers after authentication by Rolex, and supplied with a new two-year international guarantee.

Rolex’s 2023 sustainability report describes retailers purchasing pre-owned watches, sending them to Rolex for certification, and arranging maintenance before resale in a store or on a retailer’s website. The model therefore connects retailer relationships with authentication, servicing, and resale—not only the first sale of a new watch. CPO is a program across participating official retailers; the sources cited here do not establish that every Bucherer location participates.

What questions does Rolex’s ownership raise?

Could independent dealers face a competitive disadvantage?

That is a reasonable question because Rolex now owns a retailer that also sells its watches. Rolex’s public assurance was that collaboration with other official retailers would remain unchanged. The sources cited here do not establish whether allocation, terms, or sales performance for other dealers changed after integration.

Could Bucherer’s rival-brand business be affected?

Bucherer’s multibrand assortment creates a potential tension: its owner is also a watch brand competing with other brands it sells. Fratello’s 2023 coverage raised the possibility that Rolex ownership could give the group more insight into retail and customer demand across brands. That is industry analysis, not evidence that Rolex has used such information or that rival brands have been disadvantaged.

Does owning Bucherer prove Rolex gained market share?

No measurable market-share change is established by the announcement or the other cited material. The defensible conclusion is about retail reach and ownership: Rolex acquired a major multibrand retailer with a substantial announced network and existing Rolex and Tudor distribution and service roles.

What is still not established?

  • The sources cited here do not establish the date competition authorities approved the transaction or when the integration closed.
  • They do not provide a measured post-acquisition change in how Rolex treated other authorized retailers, including allocation or commercial terms.
  • They do not show a quantified effect on Rolex’s market share, Bucherer’s sales, or rival brands’ performance.
  • Rolex’s announced outlet counts are from 2023 and should not be treated as a current location total.
