The class schedule specifies whether riders jump one round or two, whether a round is against the clock, and whether a tie can send combinations back for a jump-off. To understand a placing, check the class format and its cited rule article—not just the word “Grand Prix.”
How is a show jumping round scored?
Under FEI Table A, obstacle-fault penalties and time penalties are added to give an athlete’s score for the round. The FEI Jumping Rules, 27th edition, effective 1 January 2024, require official results to show obstacle penalties, time penalties and the total separately. The lowest penalty total is best, subject to any time-based ranking or tie-break specified for the competition.

A round may be “not against the clock” or “against the clock.” That distinction affects how equal penalty totals are resolved. In a not-against-the-clock competition, a tie for first can lead to a jump-off or shared prizes, depending on the announced conditions. In an against-the-clock competition, equal penalties may be ranked by time, or the conditions may prescribe a jump-off.
What does “Grand Prix” tell you—and what does it not?
“Grand Prix” names the class, not a single mandatory sequence of rounds. FEI rules permit several formats, including:

- One round, followed by one or two jump-offs.
- Two rounds, with a possible jump-off.
- Two rounds, with the second round against the clock.
Those alternatives differ in who gets another turn and what determines the final order. A second round is not automatically a jump-off: it may be part of the class format for a wider group of riders, while a jump-off is an additional round for combinations eligible under the announced conditions.
How do the main formats differ?
| Format | Who jumps again? | How the result is decided |
|---|---|---|
| One round with a jump-off | Eligible combinations tied under the class conditions, commonly those tied for first. | The first round establishes eligibility. The jump-off determines the tied placing using its stated penalties and, if against the clock, time. |
| Two rounds, possible jump-off | Riders who qualify for the second round under the schedule; a further jump-off may resolve a tie as prescribed. | The schedule’s formula governs how the rounds count and whether a jump-off is used. |
| Two rounds, second against the clock | Riders admitted to the second round under the class conditions. | The second round is timed; the schedule specifies how its result combines with the first round and how ties are broken. |
The permitted formats are described in FEI Jumping Rules. The table is a guide to what the labels mean, not a substitute for the class’s specific conditions: exact qualification, scoring and tie-break provisions depend on the cited rule article.

What happens in a jump-off?
A jump-off is an additional round for combinations eligible under the class’s announced formula. It commonly uses a shortened course. The result may depend on both penalties and time when the jump-off is against the clock; the schedule determines the procedure. A fault does not carry one universal value across every competition format, so do not assume the same penalty or time adjustment applies in every Grand Prix.

In practical terms, a clear first round does not by itself guarantee a jump-off. Other combinations must also finish on the relevant score, and the class conditions must specify a jump-off for that tie or placing.

How can you tell which format a particular show is using?
- Find the class in the event schedule. Read the full Grand Prix class listing, not only its headline.
- Look for the format label. FEI listings may identify a class as “Jump Off” or “Two Rounds.”
- Note the rule article cited beside the class. That reference is the key to the governing procedure for rounds, eligibility and tie-breaks.
- Use the cited article to interpret the results. Check whether the second round is for qualifiers, whether the clock is used, and whether equal penalties trigger a jump-off, a time ranking or shared prizes.
An FEI listing for Heras, Spain, in June 2026, for example, labels its Grand Prix “Jump Off” and gives an associated rule article. That illustrates why the listing—not the generic class name—should guide an explanation of who returns and why.
Why do Table A and Table C penalties need to be kept separate?
The score-total explanation above concerns Table A. Table C uses a different penalty method. In its 2024 Jumping Rules, FEI specifies four seconds for a knocked-down obstacle outdoors and three seconds indoors, with stated exceptions for certain phases and jump-offs. Those are edition-specific Table C figures, not universal Table A penalties. For a current competition, follow the rule article cited in its schedule rather than applying these 2024 figures by default.
Which rule edition should you rely on?
The FEI’s 2024 Jumping Rules provide the detailed provisions described here for Table A scoring and Table C examples. A 28th-edition title identified as effective 1 January 2026 also surfaced, but the available result was marked as a consultation draft and the PDF could not be verified. For an event taking place under a newer edition, use the rule article named in that event’s schedule and confirm the applicable edition; the 2024 Table C figures above should not be treated as confirmed current rules.
