How Spies and Soldiers Keep Mechanical Watches Relevant

Mechanical watches retain a narrow role in some military and intelligence contexts, while their wartime history continues to shape civilian field-watch design.

Mechanical watches still have a place in some military and intelligence stories, but they are not standard gear for every spy or soldier. Their relevance comes from a mix of context—such as concern about connected electronics—wartime design history, and the enduring appeal of a clear, functional field watch. Today’s military-inspired civilian watches carry that legacy; they should not be confused with current issue equipment.

Why do spies wear mechanical watches?

There is no single answer, and the premise needs a qualification: most spies and soldiers do not wear mechanical watches as a rule. In some settings, a non-connected watch may be useful where electronics or traceability are a concern. Henrik Rye, CEO of Micromilspec, told Time+Tide: “In many military contexts, electronics, quartz movements, and smart watches are prohibited due to concerns over traceability.” That is Rye’s observation, not a universal military policy.

The same article quotes an anonymous former CIA officer, identified as the person behind Watches of Espionage, drawing a distinction between battlefield utility and intelligence work. The officer says a digital tool watch can be more effective for the average warfighter, while an intelligence officer focused on relationships may use a watch to project professionalism or build rapport through gifts. That describes a possible social role, not a requirement or standard practice.

Mechanical versus quartz is a trade-off

Mechanical watches run without a battery, but require winding or motion and generally need more frequent time-setting than quartz watches. The Time+Tide article characterizes quartz as better at keeping time while dependent on a battery that can run out. Neither movement type is automatically right for every mission: the relevant question is what matters in that setting—precision, independence from a battery, resistance to environmental demands, or other equipment already in use.

What watch does the military use?

There is no single watch used by every military. The specialist account above says digital tool watches can be more effective for many warfighters and that most modern military-issued watches it discusses are quartz. This is a qualified view, not a comprehensive inventory of procurement across countries and services. Mechanical watches remain part of military history and may suit particular circumstances, but they should not be described as today’s universal standard issue.

British service shows the shift to quartz

British watch supplier CWC recounts an evolution from mechanical service watches, including W10 models and RAF chronographs, to quartz. The company says it supplied the first quartz watch issued to British Forces in 1980. CWC also makes claims about its continuing supply, which are the company’s own account rather than an independent survey of current military purchasing. See CWC’s history.

How wartime needs shaped the field watch

A wristwatch was practical in wartime because soldiers needed their hands free and had to check the time quickly; a pocket watch was less convenient in that context. During the Second World War, US military watchmaking served infantry, pilots, and navigation, helping establish the functional, legible design language later associated with field watches.

The A-11 was a specification, not one unique model

The A-11 is often treated as if it were the name of a single watch. The National WWII Museum explains that it was a specification, and that the name came to refer broadly to watches built to meet it. A key requirement was a hacking movement: pulling the crown stopped the seconds hand, allowing multiple watches to be set together for synchronization.

The A-11 specification, as reported by The National WWII Museum in 2023, allowed a power reserve of 30–56 hours and a tolerance of gaining or losing 30 seconds per day. Those are historical specification figures, not performance claims for modern watches. The museum’s account of the specification and its role is available at The National WWII Museum.

Scale of wartime production

Hamilton’s own military heritage account says it delivered more than one million watches from 1942 to 1945 and that the Navy received more than 10,000 marine chronometers during the conflict. These are figures reported by Hamilton, not independently established totals. The company’s history also connects that military legacy to its civilian Khaki line at Hamilton’s military watches page.

What military heritage means for civilian watches

A modern field watch can echo the military priorities of legibility, straightforward timekeeping, and practical wear without being military-issued or suitable for operational duty. Hamilton’s Khaki Field Mechanical 42mm, for example, is a civilian mechanical watch in a military-inspired family—not evidence of present-day service issue. Its current configurations and availability are listed by Hamilton.

When comparing a field-style watch, focus on the purpose it is meant to serve rather than the military styling alone. Legibility, case size and comfort, durability, movement and power source, and the strength of its documented historical provenance are more useful measures than a broad claim that a design is “military.” WatchTime’s overview discusses these practical selection factors at WatchTime.
