There is a discrepancy in published area and completion descriptions: The Coolector’s September 2026 coverage calls the house newly completed and gives its area as 2,200 square feet. Neither that article nor the architect’s project page explains the difference. The figures should therefore remain attributed to their respective sources rather than treated as interchangeable.
Why is the house raised, and how high?
The Coolector reported in September 2026 that the house sits about 10 feet above ground on timber pilings extending as much as 35 feet below grade. The architect’s project page does not publish those dimensions, so they are media-reported details rather than specifications confirmed there.

Those measurements describe the reported arrangement; they do not establish a design flood elevation, code-compliance status, protection for a particular storm, or guaranteed defense against flooding or shoreline change. The available project description supports reading the elevation as part of the house’s site and access strategy, not as evidence of a tested resilience system.
How does the design balance ocean views and privacy?
The architects describe large window bays on the south facade that frame ocean views, set against a more closed north facade for privacy. That orientation makes the contrast legible: the house opens toward the view while limiting exposure on the street-facing side.

Cedar siding is described as echoing the colors of local dunes and driftwood. The material reference is visual; the project description does not establish a particular durability or maintenance outcome.

Why does the house have a long ramp?
Secondary coverage describes a raised main entry approached by a long, switchback-style ramp and stairs. The Coolector also reports an outdoor spiral stair and screened space beneath the house for storage. The architects’ explanation, quoted in that article, is: “Since Fire Island is car-free, everyone brings items from the ferry in wagons – and every house needs a ramp.”
That everyday logistics explanation matters to the design: a ramp is not only an alternative route to the raised entrance, but also a way to move belongings from ferry arrivals. The covered area below the house is reported as space for bicycles and beach equipment.

Surf Road House offers a documented example of a coastal home organized around elevation, access, views, privacy, and sheltered outdoor space. The reported piling and elevation dimensions may help readers picture the construction, but the sources available here do not establish how the house performs in a flood, how it complies with local requirements, or how it responds to erosion over time.
A September 2026 Dezeen search-result excerpt characterizes the site as being in a Coastal Erosion Hazard Area and attributes shoreline retreat of a foot or more per year to New York’s Department of Environmental Conservation. Because the underlying agency publication was not verified, that rate should not be treated here as an independently confirmed statistic.
