A tennis draw shows the possible matchups and a player’s route through a tournament; the daily order of play says which matches are scheduled for each court and day. A draw does not guarantee when or where a particular match will happen. For that, check the event’s latest order of play—and read “not before” as an earliest start, not a promise of an exact time.
What the draw tells you—and what it does not
The draw lays out the competition: who plays whom in each round and how winners can progress to later rounds. It is generally made in the days before the relevant event or rounds. It does not, by itself, assign a match to a specific day, court, or start time.

Those details come later in the daily order of play. Organizers use the draw to establish the possible matches, then schedule the matches that are ready to be played on a particular day. As players advance or are eliminated, the actual matches in later rounds become clear.

A court listing usually gives an opening time or first match, then places later matches in sequence. Look at the court, the order of the matches, any stated time, the time zone, and whether the listing has been updated. These details work together; a match’s position in the list is not necessarily a clock-time guarantee.

“Not before” is the earliest expected start
“Not before 3 p.m.” means the match is not scheduled to begin before 3 p.m. It may start later if the earlier match on that court is still underway or the schedule has otherwise been delayed. The label gives a lower bound, not a firm appointment.
“Followed by” gives the sequence, not a time
A match marked “followed by” is scheduled after the preceding match on that court, once the court is available. The listing does not specify how long the earlier match will take, so it cannot give an exact start time for the next one.
An example of the notation
In an ATP order-of-play example for Roland Garros dated 4 June 2026, Court Philippe-Chatrier listed a first match at 12 p.m., a singles match “not before 3 p.m.,” and another match “followed by” it. Court Suzanne-Lenglen began at 11 a.m. Those entries illustrate how a listing combines opening times, earliest starts, and sequence; they are not times to assume for another day or edition. See the ATP schedule example.

When the schedule is published
The WTA says the order of play for the following day is typically released each afternoon or evening. ATP 2026 rulebook material describes the order of play as the summary of that day’s scheduled matches and sets a usual release deadline of no later than 10 p.m. local tournament time. That deadline is an ATP provision; do not assume every tour or Grand Slam uses identical wording. WTA: Tennis explained · ATP 2026 rulebook material.
Why a match time can move
Match length is uncertain. The WTA notes that a typical set can last anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour, while the 2010 Wimbledon Isner–Mahut match lasted 11 hours and 5 minutes over three days—an extreme outlier, not a useful estimate for an ordinary match. Because an earlier match can take more or less time than expected, later matches on that court may start later than their listed time or sequence suggests. WTA: Tennis explained.
Weather can also disrupt play. Rain may delay a match before it starts or interrupt one already in progress. The WTA says players can remain on standby until the tournament officially postpones the match or all play for the day; a delay can consequently affect matches scheduled afterward.

Under the cited ATP rulebook material, an order of play that has been released may be changed only with Supervisor approval. Other competitions may have different rules, so consult the event’s own information. The ITF rules index notes that the Grand Slam rule book is implemented and enforced by the Grand Slam Board. - Find the event’s official draw. Use it to check the round and possible opponents, not to infer a match time or court.
- Open the official order of play for the date. Confirm the player matchup, court, and any listed time or sequence.
- Check the time zone. A start time is tied to the tournament’s local time unless the listing says otherwise.
- Recheck for updates on the day. Weather, long matches, and authorized schedule changes can affect the plan.
- Allow a buffer for later matches. A “not before” time is an earliest start, and “followed by” has no fixed clock time.
