The A. Lange & Söhne Richard Lange Jumping Seconds advances its large central seconds hand once per second using a mechanical remontoire—not a quartz movement. Its defining idea is the union of three mechanisms: a constant-force remontoire, jumping seconds and ZERO-RESET, arranged around a regulator-style dial.

How does the Richard Lange Jumping Seconds work?

The manually wound manufacture calibre L094.1 contains 390 parts and, according to A. Lange & Söhne, is assembled twice. Its spring barrel supplies power, but the force from a mainspring naturally declines as it unwinds. A remontoire—a small secondary spring mechanism—periodically takes energy from the barrel, stores it, then releases it to the going train in one-second intervals. Lange says this provides constant force throughout the power reserve.

That one-second release also triggers the seconds hand. A rotating star on the escape-wheel arbor controls the seconds mechanism: as a point on the star releases the lever known as a “flirt,” the lever turns and is stopped by the next point. The hand therefore lands on a marker once per second: 60 distinct steps per minute, rather than a continuous sweep. The watch remains mechanically powered and regulated; the ticking appearance alone does not make it a quartz watch. Lange’s jumping-seconds explainer describes the star-and-lever action.

What does ZERO-RESET do?

Pulling the crown interrupts power to the going train, stops the balance and returns the seconds hand instantly to zero through a multi-disc clutch and lever system. With the hand at zero, the wearer can align the watch to a time signal with one-second resolution. Pushing the crown back in re-engages the train and restarts the watch. This setting function is not evidence of chronometer certification or a particular accuracy tolerance; no numeric performance rating is stated in the cited material. Lange’s 2019 technical release explains the remontoire and ZERO-RESET.

How is the regulator-style dial laid out?

The prominent central circle shows seconds. Two smaller subdials in the lower half indicate hours and minutes, separating the three readings instead of stacking them on a conventional central handset. A triangular power-reserve indicator turns red ten hours before the reserve is depleted, giving a visual warning as winding time approaches.

Lange stated a maximum power reserve of 42 hours in its 2019 release. The current product page reviewed does not repeat that figure, so it should be understood as the specification reported in that release, not as a newly reconfirmed figure. The current product page lists the dial and mechanism overview.

What are the 2025 limited-edition specifications?

The 2025 reference 252.056 pairs a 750 white-gold case with a 750 pink-gold dial. Lange limits the edition to 100 watches. Its case measures 39.9 mm in diameter and 10.6 mm in height; the release specifies a dark-brown leather strap and white-gold pin buckle.

Specification 2025 reference 252.056
Case 750 white gold
Dial 750 pink gold
Dimensions 39.9 mm diameter; 10.6 mm height
Edition 100 watches
Strap and buckle Dark-brown leather strap; white-gold pin buckle

These details come from A. Lange & Söhne’s 2025 release. The official product page also lists a white-gold model with a black dial, reference 252.029, alongside the limited-edition white-gold model with pink-gold dial, reference 252.056. The 2016 launch was a different configuration: platinum with a solid-silver dial, limited to 100 pieces, as reported by Hodinkee’s 2016 launch coverage. The original launch configuration should not be mistaken for the later white-gold models.

What can be seen through the caseback?

The sapphire-crystal caseback reveals an untreated German-silver three-quarter plate, a hand-engraved balance cock, screwed gold chatons and blued screws. The 2025 release also identifies the remontoir spring and balance spring as in-house components paired with the movement.

What is known about price and availability?

The €78,000 figure reported by Hodinkee was the launch-era price in 2016 for the original platinum configuration. It is historical launch pricing, not a current retail price or secondary-market valuation. The cited material does not establish current price, stock, availability, seller authorization, service cost, water resistance or individual-watch condition.

For a particular example, verify the reference and edition, case and dial materials, dimensions, movement condition and service history, and whether box and papers are included. Confirm the asking price and seller status directly; those details are specific to the individual watch and are not established by model specifications.
