The Sedna Gold Speedmaster First OMEGA in Space is reference 311.63.40.30.02.001, a 39.7 mm, 18K Sedna Gold commemorative watch with a silver dial, brown ceramic tachymeter bezel and hand-wound Calibre 1861. OMEGA lists the reference as discontinued. Its name recalls astronaut Wally Schirra’s 1962 Sigma 7 flight in a different watch: his personal CK 2998.
What is the Sedna Gold First OMEGA in Space?
OMEGA’s reference 311.63.40.30.02.001 is a gold version of the Speedmaster First OMEGA in Space (FOiS). OMEGA describes it as an 18K Sedna Gold model and marks the product discontinued on its Japan-market product page. That status does not establish whether any retailer or pre-owned seller currently has one available.
The watch is a later commemorative design, not the Speedmaster worn in space in 1962. Its caseback is engraved with a seahorse emblem, “THE FIRST OMEGA IN SPACE,” “OCTOBER 3, 1962,” and a numbered-edition inscription. OMEGA calls it a numbered edition, but its product page does not state a production total.

Why it is called First OMEGA in Space
OMEGA dates the original CK 2998 Speedmaster to 1959 and describes it as the second Speedmaster generation. According to the brand, astronaut Walter “Wally” Schirra bought a CK 2998 for himself and wore it on the Sigma 7 Mercury mission, which launched on October 3, 1962. OMEGA says that flight gave the Speedmaster its “First OMEGA in Space” name.

The Sedna Gold watch commemorates that history; it is not Schirra’s personal CK 2998. OMEGA’s account is the basis for the connection, not a direct quotation from Schirra. The company recounts the history in its October 3, 2024 FOiS announcement.
How it differs from the 2024 steel FOiS
The shared First OMEGA in Space name can make the gold reference easy to confuse with OMEGA’s 2024 relaunch. They are distinct versions with different materials and movements.
