The NOMOS Metro Date Power Reserve ref. 1101 runs on the hand-wound DUW 4401, and its power reserve indicator is a mechanical display. It shows how much running time remains before the watch needs winding. NOMOS rates the caliber at up to 42 hours. The indicator is built from three wheels, and the sections below cover how those wheels are arranged, what the dial communicates, how this version differs from the newer ice blue Metro, and where NOMOS’s published information stops.
How the indicator is built
NOMOS describes its power reserve display as a patented mechanism of three wheels. The company’s technical explanation names them as:

- the window cog wheel
- the cog wheel that carries the indicator
- a planet cog wheel that meshes with the other two
The window cog wheel and the indicator-carrying cog wheel are mounted on top of each other, and the planet wheel engages both. NOMOS’s technical page states that the display mechanism in the Metro date power reserve is “ingeniously simple and also patented.” That is an unattributed corporate statement rather than a quotation from a named engineer.
NOMOS’s published explanation stops at the wheel arrangement. It does not include a full technical diagram, and it does not describe how each wheel connects to the mainspring barrel. Any account of that link would be an assumption rather than a documented detail, so this article does not offer one.

What the indicator tells the wearer
The display shows how long remains before the watch needs rewinding. NOMOS’s DUW 4401 caliber page describes the indicator as “incredibly practical,” adding that it “reminds the wearer when to rewind the watch.” That wording is corporate copy, not attributed to a named person.
NOMOS credits the display’s mint and red styling to Berlin-based designer Mark Braun. The company’s published material does not provide a color-by-color key. The practical reading is simply that the display indicates remaining reserve; the material does not support assigning a specific meaning to each color.
Power reserve and which Metro you have
The two Metro Date Power Reserve versions most often confused with each other use different movements. The table below compares them using NOMOS’s published figures.
| Feature | Metro Date Power Reserve ref. 1101 | Newer ice blue Metro Date Power Reserve |
|---|---|---|
| Caliber | DUW 4401 | DUW 4701 |
| Winding | Hand-wound | Hand-wound |
| Date adjustment | Hour-hand method described in NOMOS instructions; not presented as quick-set | Quick-set date |
| Stated power reserve | Up to 42 hours (NOMOS caliber specification) | Up to 52 hours (NOMOS announcement) |
“Up to” marks the maximum figure NOMOS states for each caliber. It is a specification, not a measured result from independent testing, and it is not a guarantee of identical running time in every condition. NOMOS also says the white silver-plated Metro version is to receive the new movement, so the DUW 4701 figures should not be attributed to ref. 1101 unless the variant is confirmed.

Setting the date on the DUW 4401
NOMOS’s date-setting instructions describe correcting the date on the DUW 4401 by turning the hour hand back and forth between approximately 8 p.m. and 1 a.m. The same instructions give an example of advancing the date repeatedly without winding through a full 24 hours each time.
The cited instructions do not present the DUW 4401 as a quick-set crown-date movement. Owners of ref. 1101 should therefore use the hour-hand method rather than assuming the quick-set behaviour of the DUW 4701 models.

Background on the DUW 4401
- 2014: According to NOMOS Glashütte, the DUW 4401 debuted as the company’s first caliber to feature its proprietary swing system.
- Caliber specification: NOMOS states up to 42 hours of power reserve for the DUW 4401.
What the published information does not establish
- No independent timing data. NOMOS’s material contains no independent performance or accuracy test of the DUW 4401. The reserve figures are the manufacturer’s maximums.
- No complete mechanical diagram. The three-wheel layout is documented, but the connection from the mainspring to the dial indication is not.
- No color legend. The mint and red styling is described, but no official color-by-color meaning is given.
- Automatic heading on the instructions. NOMOS’s instruction page carries a heading for automatic watches, yet its date-setting section lists the DUW 4401 among calibers that use the hour-hand method. The DUW 4401 is a hand-wound caliber, so that heading should not be read as meaning the movement is automatic.
NOMOS’s own statements and specifications are the basis for every figure in this article. Readers who want a timing check of an individual watch will need to measure it themselves, since no independent benchmark of this caliber is published.
