Routine care for a diamond-set watch is a dry, soft, lint-free cloth used to wipe the case, glass and bracelet. Anything beyond that, including water, soap, brushing or an ultrasonic cleaner, depends on the exact model. Diamonds can often tolerate jewelry-cleaning methods, but the watch around them is not one object. The case, movement, crown, seals, strap, finish and stone settings each respond differently to moisture and chemicals, so the manufacturer’s instructions for your specific reference come first.
Start with the manual for your exact reference
Brands publish different rules, and a rule for one diamond-set watch does not carry over to another. Before you clean anything beyond wiping, find the following in your manual or on the brand’s care page:
- Water-resistance rating: usually printed on the caseback or dial, and expressed in meters or ATM. Check whether the rating applies only to a new, sealed watch or whether it assumes routine servicing.
- Crown and pusher position: the position the crown must be in before any water contact.
- Permitted cleaning methods: whether a damp cloth, soap or water is allowed for the case and for the bracelet or strap separately.
- Strap instructions: leather, fabric and other delicate straps often have their own rules.
- Service interval: the brand’s recommended check and full-service schedule.
If the manual is missing, the brand’s customer service or an authorized service center can usually confirm these details from your reference number.
Routine cleaning at home
For everyday dirt, skin oils and dust, a dry wipe is the lowest-risk option. Use this sequence:

- Remove the watch and set it on a clean, padded surface so a dropped crown or stone does not meet a hard edge.
- Wipe the case, crystal and metal bracelet with a soft lint-free or microfiber cloth. Brands also describe gentle wiping or polishing with a soft cloth as the standard routine.
- Use the cloth’s clean corner to work around the bezel and the edges of the diamond-set areas. Keep pressure light; the aim is to lift film, not to scrub.
- Wipe the strap separately. Leather and fabric should never be soaked, and any strap that takes water should be dried and allowed to air out.
A cloth is not a cleaning kit. It makes dry wiping easier; it does not make wet cleaning safe on every watch.
When a damp cloth or soapy water may be appropriate
Some watches permit a lightly dampened cloth or mild soap for the case or metal bracelet. Only use these methods if your manual names them for your reference. If it does, keep the crown and pushers in their specified closed position, avoid soaking the watch, and dry it promptly with a soft cloth. Never run functions such as the crown or pushers underwater unless the manufacturer expressly says that is safe.

What jewelry guidance says, and why it does not transfer automatically
The Gemological Institute of America’s advice on diamond jewelry discusses mild soap, gentle brushing, rinsing and lint-free drying. That guidance was written for loose jewelry and is not a watch instruction. A watch has seals, a movement and a strap that jewelry does not. Before applying any jewelry method to a watch, confirm it against the manual. GIA’s full advice on keeping diamonds bright is at https://www.gia.edu/gia-news-research-secrets-keep-diamond-sparkling.
What to keep away from the watch
- Chemicals: Tiffany advises avoiding direct contact with detergents, solvents, fragrances and cosmetics. Perfume, hairspray and lotion applied before dressing are common sources of residue.
- Bleach and abrasives: GIA warns that chlorine bleach can damage some alloys used in diamond settings, and abrasives such as toothpaste or household scouring cleaners can scratch metal finishes.
- Ultrasonic cleaners: GIA notes that ultrasonic cleaning can shake loose stones or chip diamonds set close together. Older or fragile settings need particular caution. Do not use an ultrasonic cleaner on a diamond-set watch unless the manufacturer specifically approves it.
- Shocks and moisture on straps: Tiffany warns that shocks and moisture can harm watch components and leather straps. Remove the watch before heavy work, sports or tasks that involve impacts.
Water resistance: what the rating does and does not mean
A water-resistance rating describes what the watch was designed and tested to withstand when new and in good condition. It is not a blanket instruction to wash or immerse the watch in ordinary use.

Seals age
Cartier’s care guidance for its watches states: “The water resistance of your Water-Resistant-certified watch is guaranteed by a set of seals that undergo natural degradation due to aging.” The statement is from Cartier’s “Watches Services – Care Recommendations” page, available at https://www.cartier.com/en-us/services/watches/day-to-day-advice/. The practical consequence is that a watch’s rating can decline as gaskets age, even if it has never been dropped.
Crown position and shocks
Cartier advises owners to return the crown to its original position before any water contact. Tiffany says water resistance cannot be guaranteed at all times, can be affected by aging gaskets or shocks, and should be tested periodically. A sharp knock, a dropped watch or a damaged crown can compromise seals even when the outside looks unchanged.

A model-specific example
Tudor’s Clair de Rose reference M35800-0010 has a diamond-set dial and a stated 100 m water-resistance rating. Tudor says the screw-down crown must be fully tightened after manipulation. That specification applies to this reference only. A different diamond-set watch from another brand, or an older example of the same model, may have a different rating or a different crown requirement, so the rule should always come from the manual for your watch.
Stones and settings
Hublot’s instruction manual for its Big Bang Impact One Million High Jewellery 45 mm watch tells owners to handle the watch carefully to prevent damage to stones or settings. The manual is available at https://www.hublot.com/sites/default/files/instruction-manual/Big%20Bang%20Impact%20One%20Million%20High%20Jewellery%2045mm%20Instruction%20Manual.pdf. Avoid knocking the watch against hard surfaces, and take off the watch before handling tools, doors or heavy objects.

Service intervals differ by brand
Recommended maintenance schedules are not standardized across the industry. The table below shows the intervals that two brands publish for their watches. Use them as examples of how schedules vary, not as a universal rule.
| Brand | Published interval | What the interval covers | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| CHANEL | Five years | Movement and water-resistance services. Annual water-resistance service is recommended after prolonged exposure to saltwater or chlorine. | https://www.chanel.com/us/watches/care/ |
| Tiffany & Co. | About every two years | Regular maintenance check. | https://www.tiffany.com/faq/care-repair-faq/how-do-i-care-for-my-watch/ |
| Tiffany & Co. | About every five years | Full service. | https://www.tiffany.com/faq/care-repair-faq/how-do-i-care-for-my-watch/ |
Cartier frames water resistance around seal aging, and Tudor and Hublot publish model-level instructions rather than a single cross-brand schedule. For your watch, the brand’s current published schedule or your authorized watchmaker’s guidance controls. Ask specifically whether the watch needs a water-resistance test after the caseback has been opened, after a significant shock, or after regular exposure to saltwater or chlorine.
When to stop and call a professional
Some problems are beyond home care. Use the checks below to decide whether to continue wearing the watch or to have it inspected.
- A stone looks loose, moves or has dropped out: stop wearing the watch and take it to a qualified watchmaker or jeweler. A loose stone can be lost or can damage the setting further.
- A setting looks bent, cracked or worn: seek a jeweler or authorized service center to inspect it before the next wear.
- The watch has had a significant shock: have water resistance checked before exposing it to water again.
- The caseback has been opened, or the watch was serviced by an unauthorized shop: ask for a water-resistance test. The seal may not have been reseated correctly.
- The service date has passed: follow the brand’s schedule or your watchmaker’s recommendation, particularly if you swim, bathe or are exposed to chlorine or saltwater.
Brands and independent watchmakers offer different services and turnaround times, so confirm what is included, including any water-resistance test, before sending the watch away.
