The Oris ProPilot X Calibre 400 Laser gets its vivid dial from laser-treated titanium, not applied pigment. Oris says the treatment creates an optical effect that suppresses red light and reflects blue and green, so the dial’s appearance shifts with the light and viewing angle. Beetle-wing iridescence inspired the approach; no biological material is used.
How the dial produces color without pigment
Oris describes the Laser dial as a treated titanium surface rather than a colored coating. Its 2025 Image Booklet puts it plainly: “The ProPilot X Calibre 400 Laser’s dial contains no pigment.” The brand says laser treatment alters how the surface interacts with light: “This destroys red light waves, while reflecting blue and green waves.”
Because the reflected light depends on illumination and viewing angle, the dial can appear to change in color and intensity as those conditions change. This is an optical effect, not paint that changes color. Oris presents this account as its explanation of the treatment; the published material does not provide independent measurements of the dial’s spectral response.
What biomimicry means here
Oris points to the iridescence of beetle wings as inspiration for the dial’s appearance. The comparison is about how a surface creates color through its interaction with light, not about using insect material or reproducing a beetle wing in the watch. The project involved Oris’s engineering team, ETH Zürich, and a research laboratory introduced through ETH; Oris does not name that lab in the booklet.

Those are purchase-facing details from Oris’s localized product listing. Check the page for the destination market before relying on its price, availability, or warranty terms. It states a two-year base warranty, extendable to 10 years through MyOris registration, subject to the terms for that market. Oris also gives Calibre 400 Series a recommended service interval of 10 years in its 2024 booklet.

Why published water-resistance figures differ
The Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry reported launch-era specifications of 39 mm, 100 m water resistance, a 120-hour reserve, and accuracy of ±3 to 5 seconds per day in its November 30, 2023 report, “Oris integrates an innovative dial technology”. Oris’s localized product page lists water resistance as 10 bar. These figures come from different sources and dates; for current purchase-facing specifications, consult the relevant Oris listing rather than treating the 2023 report as a current measurement.
