Its defining contrast is practical as well as visual: a pocket-watch case houses a chronograph, while an engraved jockey and horse tie the design to Longines’ equestrian history. The year in its name points to the historical inspiration, not the reissue’s launch date.
What the Jockey 1878 reissue is
Longines announced the watch on 16 March 2016. In its press release, the brand described it as an 18-carat rose-gold replica of a model fitted with the first chronograph created by Longines. Longines also said the reissue comprised 20 numbered pieces and that each had an engraving of a jockey and his mount on the caseback.
That establishes the edition’s stated design and quantity, but “replica” should not be taken to mean that every detail reproduces an original 1878 watch. The accessible release does not provide a full technical comparison between the historical model and the reissue.
Why the pocket-watch format matters
The watch brings together two parts of Longines’ history: equestrian imagery and chronograph timing. Its pocket-watch form makes the chronograph a less familiar proposition than a wristwatch chronograph. The jockey-and-mount caseback supplies the direct racing reference; the timing function connects the object to the brand’s chronograph history.

Time+Tide’s 2019 account describes the reissue with a 55 mm rose-gold case, white dial, Roman numerals, blue hands and small-seconds subdial at six. It reports that the chronograph is operated at the crown, rather than by separate pushers on the case. These physical details are from secondary coverage, not the cited Longines release.
Movement and reported specifications
MasterHorologer’s 2016 article identifies the reference as L7.031.8.11.1 and reports calibre L790.2 (ETA A08.L31), a manually wound, column-wheel chronograph movement. It lists 20 jewels, a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour, 48 hours of power reserve and a central 60-second chronograph hand. These technical details are reported by that publication; they are not independently confirmed by the accessible Longines release.

Original inspiration and the “1878” name
Longines’ release frames the reissue as a replica of a model equipped with the company’s first chronograph. Time+Tide describes the original as a late-19th-century Longines pocket chronograph and reports that it is held at the Longines museum in Saint-Imier. That museum provenance comes from Time+Tide; the Longines release cited here does not provide a collection record or establish that the model was made in 1878.
Accordingly, the safe distinction is that 1878 is part of the reissue’s name and historical framing. The announcement date for the reissue was 2016.

Was it limited, and what did it cost?
Yes. Longines said the 2016 reissue was limited to 20 numbered pieces. Time Transformed reported a launch price of €35,940 in 2016 and said availability was expected from the end of that year. That euro amount is a historical reported launch price, not a current asking price or valuation.
No current official catalogue entry, confirmed active listing, or documented sale price is established by these sources. The limited production makes the model scarce by design, but it is not enough to calculate what an individual example is worth now. Condition, completeness, provenance and a verified recent transaction would matter when assessing a particular watch.
